Restaurant Details

  • To step into Chaco Canyon Cafe—either in its original U-District incarnation or in West Seattle—is to enter an idealistic utopia. Their environmentally sound example-setting extends from the menu—which is 90 percent organic and 100 percent vegetarian, with a healthy selection of raw and vegan items—to every aspect of the space, including the nonexistent trash cans. On offer are soup, sandwiches, smoothies, entirely raw entrees, and Stumptown coffee. If you've got a fetish for rigorously ethical food—where politics are as important as taste—Chaco Canyon is totally your scene.

Delisciousness for Everyone

The red lentil soup, sea vegetable salad and health tonic are my staples at this awesome place. I'm a consciousness meat-eater and I always leave here thinking, "I could/should be a vegetarian".

Extremely impressed

I had been raw for about two months before going to Chaco and had been eating a lot of raw, whole fruit and veggies, which becomes monotonous. Chaco (and Thrive on 65th & Roosevelt) opened my eyes to the world of gourmet(esque) raw cuisine. I had the nacho plate and refused to share with my friend 1)because it was like twelve bucks 2)because it was freakin' raw-esome. Anyway, the swamp monster is really good. Loved the flavor of the golden beets with the pears and kale. Yummy.

But the piece de resistance was definitely the "cheese"cake. It was delicious and at $6/slice, it better be damned good. Anyway, the desserts are cheaper here than at Thrive (also, Thrive's desserts are teeny tiny in comparison to the monstro-slice of cake I got at Chaco) But, they both provide excellent, friendly service and scrumptious food.

The five star rating says it all.

never the same thing twice

I really want to love Chaco Canyon, but it's just not going to happen. The food is good, but crazy expensive, and they are not consistent at all. I order the same sandwich every time I go there, and it's always a different variation on "pesto melt". Even the soups are different each visit; it must depend on which white guy with dreads made the soup that day. Same with their special freshly made juice concoctions - regardless of what's on the menu, they just add whatever they can remember goes in the drink. Everyone is always frantic behind the counter - taking orders, squeezing wheatgrass - but the food sure doesn't get out of the kitchen in a hurry.

Delicious!

Try the sandwiches, especially the artichoke melt and the pesto melt.

Convert me!

I've been to Chaco many times now, and if I got a "dry and bland" pastry there, it would not be "as expected"... I'd tell them it was stale/untasty, they'd be chagrined, they'd give me my money back.

Personally, I expect vegan food to be delicious. Chaco Canyon typically delivers.

The whole truth in advertising, please

Signs at their location and the banner on their website advertise "organic" not "vegan". What, are you trying to convert us or something? The pastry I had was dry and bland, as expected. The vegetable matter was not all beyond its composting date.

So-so

Honestly, I haven't been that impressed. While I do think that this place is great for raw foodists or vegans (it definitely fills a niche), the service can be incredible slow and confusing. I do like the Egyptian Lentil soup and the grilled "cheese" sandwiches, but the muffins are grainy and bland. I would eat the raw pizza, but it is expensive and not very filling. I will keep going back though, and trying new dishes.

Almost Too Perfect

This place would be perfect (healthy food, great employees) but I actually really resent that I insist that they use my name when bringing out orders. Whatever happened to anonymity? Anyway, I shouldn't complain too much. Great place even for non-vegans.

Thoroughly Impressed!!

The new location is great, the desserts offered absolutely delicious and the menu offers enough choices to make returning over and over new and exciting every time. We tried the Blueberry Tart, Carob Pie, Veggie Lasagna, Pesto Melt and Thai Grinder and they were ALL delicious. Nothing here is bland. Raw foodists, vegans, people of all dietary types will find something they love here.

Wheat Free!

I have only visited Chaco Canyon once, on purpose, to buy some wheat-free pastries for my sister. I believe they get their pastries from the Flying Apron, which I have not ben to, but i was thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere and quality of their offerings in the case and watching the food being prepared in plain view. I intend to go back and try some of the exciting looking smoothies. The wheat-free pastries looked so appetizing (and were delicious per my sister) that I almost bought some for myself. The location seems odd to me, but they had plenty of business. I recommend checking them out.

This is it

Back in Massachusetts a few years ago, when I was reading about this new raw food thing you crazy westcoasters were doing, this is the place I didn't know I was fantasizing about. Tasty, weird, (relatively) cheap food. Awfully nice people too.

Healthy food without a bad attitude!

I love Chaco Canyon Cafe. It was cute when it was in that little basementy space and the new digs are slick but still welcoming. No healthier-than-thou attitude here, just amazing food and the best mocha to boot! Righteous...
