THURSDAY JUNE 9

KRONOS QUARTET

Is any other string quartet, aside from the Arditti String Quartet, as adventurous and wide ranging? Unlike the Ardittis, who specialize in European High Modernism, the Kronos range further afield from East to West, Uptown to Downtown, from plunderphonics to minimalism to new Asian classical. They're joined by Wu Man, a master of the pipa (a kind of Chinese lute) in The Cusp of Magic written last year by Terry Riley. Guest percussionist Amy Knoles, a cofounder of the California EAR Unit, plays Chinese cymbals, called bo, in Guo Wenjing's String Quartet No. 2 with Percussion. Wu also joins the opening act Vogudi (Stuart Dempster, Abel Domingues, and Tamara Weikel). Bagley Wright Theatre, 155 Mercer St, (800) 325-7328, 7:30 pm, $25-$42.50.

SATURDAY JUNE 11

SEATTLE REPERTORY JAZZ ORCHESTRA

The SRJO revives Latin Jazz classics, including the seminal CuBop opus "Cubano Be Cubano Bop," Jobim's "Chega de Saudade," Hermeto Pascoal's "Son du Sol," and others. Composer/pianist and Pascoal disciple Jovino Santos Neto premieres his "Gente Boa" commissioned by the SRJO. Also Sun Jun 12 at the Kirkland Performance Center at 3 pm. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third Ave and Union St, 523-6159, 7:30 pm, $16-$32.

3 LEG TORSO

Twenty years from now someone will devote their doctoral thesis to the abundance of accordion-driven groups that cropped up in the last decade. This Portland-based quintet leaven klezmer, cabaret tunes, and tango with touches of the avant: unusual percussion instruments (bongo, dumbek, xylophone, guïro), brainy arrangements, and spare, almost minimal, textures. The Triple Door, 216 Union St, 838-4333, 8 pm, $15.

CRANE & DILLER

Saxophonist Adam Diller and drummer Matt Crane, two-thirds of the skull-pummeling out-jazz trio BNSF, share a bill with another sax/drum duo, Michael Monhart and Gregg Keplinger. Bop Street Records, 5219 Ballard Ave NW, 297-2232, 8 pm, free.

JOHANNES BERGMARK

I know very little about this Swedish/Polish improviser, except that he builds instruments with appealing names such as the Kaleidochord, Brillolin, Singing Coffin, and Clown Trumpet. After a solo set, he teams up with Angelina Baldoz (trumpet), Gust Burns (tape recorders), and Bryan Eubanks (home-made analog synth, tape-player, and soprano saxophone). Gallery 1412, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 322-1533, 8 pm, $5-$15 sliding-scale donation.

GRETA MATASSA QUINTET

A superb and sassy vocalist, Matassa sings standards, old chestnuts, and snazzy originals. With guest trumpeter Tom Marriott, who dished out creamy solos on "Mood Indigo" and "Basie at Newport" with the SRJO recently. Tula's, 2214 Second Ave, 443-4221, 8:30 pm, $12.

SUNDAY JUNE 12

SEATTLE IMPROVISERS ORCHESTRA

An unspecified army of musicians play structured and conducted improvisations. Let's hope they avoid the usual pitfalls of large ensembles-staggered, imprecise rhythms, an overall loudness that consistently swells from ppp to fff, and arch forms-and instead find what makes group improvising interesting: rowdy fun, tense stretches of silence, dense macro- and microscopic polyphony, and unexpected timbres. Gallery 1412, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 322-1533, 8 pm, $5-$15 sliding-scale donation.
