THURSDAY JUNE 16

MUSIC FOR LUNCH

For the final concert of the season, pianist Ann Cummings plays Bartok's still-daunting "Allegro Barbaro," "Impromptu No. 5" by Jean Sibelius, "Musica '66" by Francisco Kropfl, and Suite for Harpsichord or Piano II by Richard Karpen. This weekly series resumes in the fall. Sherman-Clay Piano & Organ, 1624 Fourth Ave, 622-7580, 12:15 pm, free.

SEATTLE SYMPHONY

One of my New Year's resolutions was to revisit the music of Paul Hindemith, which magnetically attracts such adjectives as "sturdy," "well-crafted," and "stolid." I like his usually boisterous Symphonic Metamorphosis on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber but Hindy is no match for Richard Strauss's dazzlingly overwrought Also sprach Zarathustra, whose climactic intro was pillaged by Kubrick for 2001. Oh, and pianist Hélène Grimaud joins conductor Gerard Schwarz and the band to premiere Arvo Pärt's Lamentate. Also Fri Jun 17 at 1 pm and Sat Jun 18 at 8 pm. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave and Union St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $15-$85.

FRIDAY JUNE 17

JEFFREY MORGAN TRIO

A Northwest native who has resided in Köln, Germany since the early 1990s, Morgan has gigged with many heavyweights of free improvisation, including LaDonna Smith, Paul Lytton, Keith Rowe of AMM, Alan Silva, and the late Peter Kowald. Two top-notch improvisers, bassist Mike Bisio and percussionist Greg Campbell, team up with this intrepid saxophonist. Gallery 1412, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 322-1533, 8 pm, $5-$15 sliding-scale donation.

SATURDAY JUNE 18

SOUNDS OF SLOVENIA

Held in tandem with The RetroFuturistic Universe of NSK exhibition, this concert features contemporary chamber music by Slovenian composers, including the world premiere of "Blue Wind" for two flutes, harp, and cello by Brina Jez Brezavscek. Frye Art Museum, 704 Terry Ave, corner of Cherry Ave and Terry Ave, 622-9550 x264, 2 pm, $5/$10.

THE ESOTERICS

This a cappella ensemble marks the centennial of Estonian composer Eduard Tubin (1905-1982). I know nothing of Tubin's music, but the press release promises "a great variety of textures, elaborate forms, romantic harmonies, and refreshingly pristine images of Estonian national folk poetry." Director Eric Banks has a knack for corralling interesting composers, so count me in. Also Sun Jun 19 at Holy Rosary Church in West Seattle at 3 pm. St Joseph's Church, 732 18th Ave E, 935-7779, 8 pm, $10-$20.

TUESDAY JUNE 21

DIANE SCHUUR

I was dismayed by Schuur's diva behavior at the Concord Jazz Festival last March, but when the fussing was over, she sang superbly: exuberant yet precise vibrato, exacting enunciation of the lyrics, and spine-tingling scatting. Through Sun Jun 26. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 7:30 pm, $22.50-$24.50.

FROG UNIVERSITY PLAYERS

During the 1990s, a small coterie of local jazz musicians gathered weekly in the U-District apartment of Al Hood to delve into his angular out-jazz compositions. Led by trumpeter and Hood devotee Jim Knodle, the Frog University Players explore the late composer's treasury of music. On the House, 1205 E Pike St, 324-3974, 8 pm, donation requested.
