THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 1

SEATTLE WOMEN'S JAZZ ORCHESTRA
This swinging ensemble warms up for Bumbershoot with big-band standards as well as originals from last year's amiable, toe-tapping CD Dreamcatcher (OA2 Records). Seattle City Hall, 600 Fourth Ave, 684-7171, noon, free.

CLEO LAINE & JOHN DANKWORTH
I love Laine's ability to alternate from low, dusky, near-masculine notes to an agile, crystalline falsetto in a trice. Backing Laine is a quartet featuring her musical soul-mate of several decades, the still-nimble reedman John Dankworth. Through Sept 3 with sets at 7:30 and 9:30 pm as well as Sun Sept 4 with sets at 6:30 and 8:30 pm. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 7:30 and 9:30 pm, $21.50/$23.50.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 2

ADAM & TINDEMANS
Cathedral organist Joseph Adam and viola da gambist Margriet Tindemans convene in the Cathedral Chapel to play Baroque works by J. S. Bach, Telemann, Frescobaldi, Froberger, Muffat, and others. Apart from its snug acoustics, the chapel also sports a period-appropriate 1742 Traeri Italian organ. St. James Cathedral, 804 Ninth Ave, 382-4874, 7:45 pm, suggested donation $18/students and seniors pay as able.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 3

OLYMPIC MUSIC FESTIVAL
Held just outside Quilcene on the Olympic Peninsula, this festival features chamber music in a rustic setting. After weeks and weeks of Mozart and Beethoven, it's time to serve up some hits by other dead (and great) white guys: J. S. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 6 and Schubert's Quintet in A Major for Piano and Strings D. 667, better known as "The Trout." Mendelssohn's Sextet in D Major for Piano and Strings, op 110 rounds out the program. Also Sun Sept 4 at 2 pm. The Barn, Center Rd outside of Quilcene, 527-8839, 2 pm, $12–$24.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 4

MARC SMASON
Ranging from Gershwin to gospel, this trombonist and vocalist leads a trio with two fine jazzmen, Craig Hoyer (piano) and the ubiquitous Jeff Johnson (bass). History House, 790 N 34th St, 675-8875, 2–4 pm, free.

COMPLINE CHOIR
Circa 530 AD, St. Benedict prescribed music and manual labor as an antidote to the excesses of monasticism (self-flagellation, standing on a pillar year after year, vermiform mortification, etc.). Benedict outlined seven offices to be spoken and sung. Compline, the last holy office of the day, is sung after dinner, hence the late Sunday start time. The cathedral is refreshingly cool this time of year so put something on over that too-tight T-shirt. St. Mark's Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave E, 323-0300, 9:30 pm, free.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 6

BURNS & EUBANKS
Here's my vote for sleeper gig of the week. Free improvising pianist and tape-recorder revivalist Gust Burns teams up with Portland-based reedman and electronicist Bryan Eubanks. Gallery 1412, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 322-1533, 8 pm, $5–$15 sliding-scale donation.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 7

DAWN CLEMENT TRIO
This talented pianist's expansive, straight-ahead style draws from hard bop, gospel, and the blues. Clement sings too, with a spare, captivating voice that sometimes seems on the verge of shivering. Tula's, 2214 Second Ave, 443-4221, 8 pm, $5.
