Two Festivals

Two upcoming festivals, the 19th Seattle Improvised Music Festival (Thurs Feb 12 to Sun Feb 22) and Icebreaker II: Baltic Voices (Fri Feb 13 to Sun Feb 15), feature an adventurous array of composed and improvised music.

North America's longest-running event devoted to freely improvised music, the Seattle Improvised Music Festival has imported legendary composer and improviser Pauline Oliveros (Thurs Feb 12, PONCHO Hall at Cornish, 8 pm). A seminal figure in tape music--her Bye Bye Butterfly remains a classic--Oliveros champions Deep Listening, a profound reorientation to hearing the world that she presents in workshops here (Fri Feb 13, PONCHO Hall at Cornish, noon) and around the world.

The hip Eastlake venue Lo_Fi hosts noise barrage trio BNSF and headliners Dave Tucker and William Roper, an electric guitar/tuba duo (Fri Feb 13, 8 pm). The triple bill also pairs Sean Meehan and Angelina Baldoz. Meehan, famed for excavating a symphonic array of sounds from a single drum, teams up with Baldoz, a probing Seattle-based trumpeter who proffers an array of beguiling extended techniques, including dipping her instrument in water.

Organized by the musically voracious Seattle Chamber Players, Icebreaker II: Baltic Voices presents chamber music by composers--many of whom will be in attendance--from Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Poland, Denmark, and Russia. A few big names crop up, such as Saariaho, Rautavaara, Ruders, and P...rt, but most of the composers and compositions are hardly known, and thus the festival hopes to break the ice.
