FRIDAY APRIL 7

BY CRUMB!
Has any 20th-century composer matched the innovative instrumentation of George Crumb? Mauricio Kagel (1898, "Tactil," Exotica), Penderecki (Threnody, Fluorescences for orchestra), and Lucia Dlugoszewski's Fire Fragile Flight come close. Yet Crumb's ravishing, rapturous sound world of crepitating chimes, bells, mad whispers, muttering, distant whistling, and masterly use of amplification set him apart. Members of the Saint Helens String Quartet, stalwart percussionist Gunnar Folsom, and pianists Oana Rusu-Tomai and Oksana Ezhokina, perform Dream Sequence (Images II), which calls for an offstage glass harmonica, Four Nocturnes (Night Music II), and Zeitgeist for two amplified pianos. Kerry Hall at Cornish College, 710 E Roy, 325-6500, 8 pm, $7.50/$15.

SATURDAY APRIL 8

SEATTLE CHAMBER PLAYERS
The SCP contributes to the Shostakovich Uncovered Festival with the Symphony No. 15 in a composer-authorized reduction for sextet. Pre-concert recital at 6 pm by Oleg Manov, who tackles Shosty's Piano Sonata No. 2 and the early Aphorisms from 1927. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third Ave and Union St, 292-ARTS, 7 pm, $12–$20.

ORCHESTRA SEATTLE
George Shangrow leads this commendable outfit (which includes the Seattle Chamber Singers) in Verdi's immortal Requiem. Meany Theater, UW Campus, 800-838-3006, 7 pm, $10–$20.

TUESDAY APRIL 11

PAT MARTINO QUARTET
Blessed with a dusky tone and fleet fingers, Martino celebrates the release of his new album, Remember: A Tribute to Wes Montgomery (Blue Note). While I dig his readings of two Montgomery staples, "Four on Six" and "Unit Seven," Martino's comping is the real treat on this disc. His chords sometimes wiggle and wobble as if about to erupt into a '70s wah-wah, cop-show jazz lick, yet Martino always stays cool, discreetly bolstering the groove. Also Wed April 12. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 7:30 pm, $20.50.
