MICHAEL BISIO TRIO
Bassist Michael Bisio plays standards with guitarist Paul Sawyer and flutist Bernie Jacobs in a drummerless trio. Such aggregations are rare, but can be a revelation to both listeners and players. Freed of the steady broad-band percussive pulse of the cymbals and bass drum, the ears can focus on the rhythmic interplay of the other instruments and really get inside the tunes. Pink Door, 1919 Post Alley, 443-3241, 8 pm, free.
FRIDAY APRIL 11
ANDY SHAW & NEW STORIES TRIO
Singer Andy Shaw has corralled a stellar lineup of straight-ahead players to aid and abet his jazz vocals. Joining Shaw are UW teacher and pianist Marc Seales, bassist Doug Miller, and drummer/Origin Records honcho John Bishop. There's free jazz and jazz that's free, so don't forget to tip the band. Uncommon Grounds, 6508 Roosevelt Way NE, 527-1128, 9 pm, free.
PLATYPUS MUSIC
Latin jazz in my favorite Ballard watering hole? I prefer the Old P on slower Mondays, but the topnotch cast, including keyboardist Jovino Santos-Neto, percussionist Tor Dietrichson, and Julian Priester on trombone, may tempt me anyway. The Old Pequliar, 1722 NW Market St, 782-8886, 9 pm, free.
SATURDAY APRIL 12
ACADEMY OF ANCIENT MUSIC
Led by Andrew Manze, this period instrument orchestra has recorded squillions of fine CDs--I have a bunch on my shelf--and truly deserve the label "world class." For his farewell tour, Manze leads the band in works by Handel, Vivaldi, Locatelli, and others. Call for tickets, as this will likely sell out. Town Hall, Eighth Ave and Seneca St, 325-7066, 8 pm, $10-$32.
HADLEY CALIMAN
This farewell concert celebrates longtime jazz Cornish faculty and saxophonist Hadley Caliman, an early disciple of Dexter Gordon and fixture of jazz clubs around town. Joining Caliman are pianist Dawn Clement, bassist Chuck Deardorf, and percussionist D'Vonne Lewis. Kerry Hall, 710 E Roy St, 325-6500, 8 pm, $6/$12.

SUNDAY APRIL 13
PAUL TAUB
Taub, flutist for the Seattle Chamber Players, presents a recital that reflects his omnivorous musical interests. He'll premiere a piece by Azerbaijani composer Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, as well as tackle pieces by Bach, Hovhaness (the Sonata for Bass Flute), Georgian composer Otar Taktakishvili, and a Middle Eastern-tinged work by Cornish College composer Bern Herbolsheimer. Kerry Hall, 710 E Roy St, 325-6500, 7 pm, $6/$12.
TUESDAY APRIL 15
DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET
Lots of bass players rumbled through Miles Davis' various bands, yet Holland was perhaps the unlikeliest one to strike out on his own and become a leader. Revered for his playing on In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew, Holland forged his own path with 1972's Conference of the Birds, an album so good that I foolishly loaned it out and never got it back. Also Wed April 16 at 8 pm and Thurs April 17 at 8 and 10 pm. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 8 pm, $18.50/$20.50.
