Concerts

THURSDAY JUNE 19

SEATTLE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

The SSO's season is almost over, so if you haven't heard them yet the time is nigh, especially as Schwarz & Co. excel at this gig's meat-and-potatoes repertory: Haydn's Symphony No. 22 and Mahler's Symphony No. 9. Also Fri Jun 20 at 8 pm and Sun Jun 22 at 2 pm. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave & Union St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $11-$75.

FRIDAY JUNE 20

LAKE UNION CIVIC ORCHESTRA

This community orchestra and the Cascadian Woodwind Quintet premiere the Concerto for Woodwind Quintet and Orchestra, by composer and Julliard faculty member Eric Ewazen. Also on the program is Beethoven's Symphony No. 7. Town Hall, Eighth Ave and Seneca St, 343-5826, 7:30 pm, $8/14.

WAIT, HUMM

I'm always up for the unusual fusion of sound and movement. Seattle choreographer Sheri Cohen enlisted inBOIL's Carl Farrow to integrate the ambient sounds of the theater, sounds made by the dancers, and sounds collected outside the theater into the performance. I saw an early version of this piece and was enthralled at how the dancers demarcated space with a flick of the wrist. Also Sat Jun 21 at 8 and 10 pm and Sun Jun 22 at 8 pm. Chamber Theater, 915 E Pine St, fourth floor, 914-4161, shows at 8 and 10 pm, $14.

VANCOUVER JAZZ FESTIVAL

One of the biggest, if not the biggest, jazz events on the West Coast, this Vancouver, BC, festival has enormous range (and thanks to heavy corporate sponsorship, an immense reach), booking everything from the straight-ahead to the aggressively avant. This festival runs June 20-July 1. Various locations in Vancouver, BC, surf www.coastaljazz.ca for full lineup and venue listings, 604-872-5200, $10-$80.

SUNDAY JUNE 22

SORELLE

If you missed this probing chamber group's fine performance at Polestar last month, they're repeating a good chunk of that concert tonight: George Crumb's Vox Balaenae (complete with masks and blue light!), Maurice Ravel's haunting Chansons Madécasses, and some of Samuel Barber's Hermit Songs, as well as Sorelle flutist Sarah Bassingthwaighte's Hushabye and Ralph Forsland's rackety Qua. Seattle Asian Art Museum, 1400 E Prospect St, Volunteer Park, 789-3628, 3 pm, $10/$12.

MONDAY JUNE 23

SOUND OF THE BRUSH

This weekly series devoted to presenting new work by improvisers features drummer Matt Crane, who one night dazzled me with his knowledge of obscure records and the next day knocked me out with an unassuming though potent solo drum performance. With vocalist Rajne Edins. CoCA, 1420 11th Ave, 728-1980, 8:30 pm, donation requested.

TUESDAY JUNE 24

EDDIE PR:VOST TRIO

British drummer Eddie Prévost is a legend in improvised music and a founding member of the seminal group AMM. His book, No Sound Is Innocent, is a provocative and possibly life-changing examination of making music. Joining Prévost are saxophonist Tom Chant and bassist John Edwards. Do not miss this show. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 329-4224, 8 pm, $8.
