MUSIC FOR LUNCH

This bargain concert series moves to Thursdays. Pianist Judith Cohen and violinist Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi play Aaron Copland's Blues for solo piano, Eugene YsaØe's Sonata No. 2 "Obsession" for solo violin, and Samuel Barber's seldom-heard Excursions for solo piano. Last year, this enterprising cellist blew through town with Bach's Suites for Solo Cello. Now he's kicking off a 50-state tour with a program bristling with living American composers including Tod Machover, Toby Twining, Steven Mackey, and Lou Harrison. Highly recommended. RON FEIN

Electroacoustic composer and boom-box baron Fein returns to present new work for his installation of 20 boom boxes. As heard on his recent double CD Habitat, this installation blossoms into an overwhelming jungle of folk music from around the world. Listeners can wander through various parts of the gallery and make their own mental mix. If you missed Fein's legendary train-station gig many years ago, here's your chance. Also Sat Sept 13. WEST SEATTLE JAZZ FESTIVAL

Looking to catch up with Seattle's jazz scene? This free weekend festival has a smartly selected lineup from straight-ahead local legends like Julian Priester to hot commodities like Skerik and his Syncopated Taint Septet to edgier cats like the Ficus Trio. Someone in their planning department had the good sense to stagger the schedule, so you can flit between stages and get a taste of every act. Also Sun Sept 14 from noon to 8 pm. CLARINETISSIMO

Tag-team clarinetists Sean Osborn, Jennifer Nelson, Cris Inguanti, and David Frank tackle music by Brahms, Stravinsky, Uhl, and Schreiner. Works on the program that caught my eye include Alfred Uhl's Divertimento scored for clarinet quartet, and a Stravinsky World War I-era gem, Three Pieces for Clarinet Solo. Show up a mite early; last year this show was packed. Soundbridge at Benaroya Hall, Second Ave and Union St, 336-6600, 3 pm, free.

RESOUND TO SENDER

Think of this gig as a remixer's banquet. Four late-'80s Cornish grads--Sun Ra Arkestra veteran John Silverman, local big-band leader James Knapp, drummer Aaron Alexander, and guitarist John Schott--do an improv gig. After the show, each musician's performance is shuttled to remixers waiting in the U.S. and Europe. The audience gets both discs--the improv gig and the composed remix--mailed to them at a later date. Now that's service. Kerry Hall at Cornish, 710 E Roy St, 325-6500, 8 pm, $6/$12.
