SHIRLEY HORN
Last summer I put on Shirley Horn singing "You're My Thrill" and chills ran up my spine. Horn was brought to New York in the early 1960s by Miles Davis, who must have been captivated by her sultry voice and impeccable way with a lyric. I know I am. Paramount Theatre, 911 Pine St, 292-2787, 7:30 pm, $29.50-$44.50.
PHILIP GELB
This master of the shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) is one of the few such flutists who focus on adventurous improvisation. Gelb also presents a recent composition dedicated to his longtime friend and collaborator, the late bassist Matthew Sperry. Guitar saboteur Bill Horist and clarinetist Jesse Canterbury join forces for the second set. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 329-4224, 8 pm, $7.
FRIDAY OCTOBER 17
NOGGIN
If you didn't catch Noggin's recent and stunning Polestar gig (all-acoustic with dueling violins), here's another chance to experience their telepathic turbulence. For the second set, Jason Young, a free improviser on the electric guitar from Salt Lake City, takes the stage. I have no idea what Young sounds like, but I'm grateful that someone is making subversive music in Mormon country. Polestar Music Gallery, 1412 18th Ave at E Union St, 329-4224, 8 pm, $7.
SATURDAY OCTOBER 18
MOURNING BECOMES ELECTRA
This epic opera, based on the Eugene O'Neill play (which in turn was based on Aeschylus' Oresteia), has undergone major revisions, hence the billing as "the final two act version." Composer Marvin David Levy removed much of the dissonance heard in the 1967 score, which was purportedly spiced up to please his more avant colleagues. Some might condemn such backsliding, but kudos to Levy for admitting that he was just going along with the crowd. Also Sun Oct 19 at 2 pm and Oct 22, 24, 25, 29, 31, and Nov 1 at 7:30 pm. McCaw Hall, 321 Mercer St, 389-7676, 7:30 pm, $37-$118.

SEATTLE CHAMBER PLAYERS
The SCP commissioned six Russian composers--Victor Ekimovsky, Igor Kefalidi, Yuri Krasavin, Vladimir Martynov, Vladimir Nikolaev, and Alexander Vustin--for new works ranging from "avant-garde to instrumental theater." Pre-concert talk starts at 6:15 pm. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third Ave and Union St, 286-5052, 7 pm, $12-$20.
COMPLINE CHOIR
As an antidote to excesses of monasticism such as self-flagellation, standing on a pillar year after year, and vermiform mortification, St. Benedict suggested music and manual labor. Compline, the last holy office of the day, is sung after dinner, hence the late-Sunday start time. Dress warmly. St Mark's Cathedral, 1245 10th Ave E, 323-0300, 9:30 pm, free.
MONDAY OCTOBER 20
JEFF LORBER
I could mock this CD release party sponsored by smooth-jazz station KWJZ, but they're laughing all the way to the bank, so why bother? And heck, some of the funkier licks might pass muster with a purist like me. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 7 pm, $30.
