SEATTLE IMPROVISED MUSIC FESTIVAL
The SIMF continues apace with stalwart Seattle bassist Michael Bisio and alto saxophonist Wally Shoup teaming up with UK percussion phenomenon Paul Hession. Bay Area-based Tim Perkis--who copioneered making music with networked computers and stunned Seattle listeners when he sat in with the legendary ...kagel... at electromuse2 back in 1999--duets with trombonist/vocalist Ron Heglin. ConWorks, 500 Boren Ave N, 381-3218, 8 pm, $5-$15 sliding-scale donation.
FRIDAY FEBRUARY 20
JANNA W·CHTER
Janna W...chter sings some of Samuel Barber's settings of poetry by James Joyce: "Rain Has Fallen," "Nocturne," "Sleep Now," and "I Hear an Army." Along with songs by her accompanist Ivan Sokolov, W...chter also tackles three of Aaron Copland's luminous Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson: "There Came a Wind Like a Bugle," "Why Do They Shut Me Out of Heaven," and "I've Heard an Organ Talk Sometimes." Westminster Church, 1729 Harvard Ave, 322-5373, 7:30 pm, freewill donation.
COMBUSTION COLLECTIVE
These groovy, jazz-driven players couple the vibe of Dennis Coffey's disco funk classic "Scorpio" with the sinuous twists and turns of Miles Davis' music circa 1974's Big Fun. Suite G, 513 N 36th St, 632-5656, 10 pm, $5.
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 21
DIDO AND AENEAS
The Seattle Choral Company performs Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas. Based on Virgil's Augustan-era epic The Aeneid, this venerable English opera premiered in 1689. Laced with unexpectedly alluring dissonance, forward-looking works like Dido remind me that much of music history has nothing to do with "progress." St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 8398 NE 21st St, Medina, 363-1100, 8 pm, $8-$20.
LES POULES
The Seattle Improvised Music Festival has imported this formidable all-star trio of Canadian improvisers and composers: Joane Hétu, Diane Labrosse, and Danielle Palardy Roger. As Les Poules, they deftly interweave saxophone, voice, and percussion with sounds of everyday life into elegant (and live) musique concrète. Also on the bill: Thingsome Q, a freely improvising string quartet with violinists Tari Nelson-Zagar and Tom Swafford. ConWorks, 500 Boren Ave N, 381-3218, 8 pm, $5-$15 sliding-scale donation.

THE SUNS OF ALBERT
Several Thursdays ago while walking near Coffee Messiah, I heard a stentorian shriek that sent shivers up my spine. I thought someone was in trouble, so I hustled my way toward the sound. I rounded the corner and saw Detonator Beth leaning out of Coffee Messiah's door, bellowing a banshee wail into the dead of night. Joining DB are saxophonist Michael Monhart, Dalton Davis on drums, and guitarist Ed Petry. Coffee Messiah, 1554 E Olive Way, 861-8233, 7 pm, donation requested.
