THURSDAY JUNE 3

SEATTLE SYMPHONY

Gerard Schwarz leads the band in selections from Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Violinist James Ehnes steps onstage to solo in the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto. I'm licking my chops for Strauss' tone poem Ein Heldenleben; the brass-blaring rodomontade of the "Hero's Battlefield" section never fails to send chills up my spine. Also Sat June 5 at 8 pm. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave and Union St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $12-$80.

JESSICA LURIE ENSEMBLE

Saxophonist/flutist Jessica Lurie returns briefly to Seattle and enlists Sue Orfield (tenor sax), Joe Doria (keyboards), Keith Lowe (bass), and Will Dowd (drums) for some aggro yet funky jazz. The Triple Door, 216 Union St, 838-4333, sets at 7:30 and 10 pm, $12.

FRIDAY JUNE 4

UW CHAMBER SINGERS

This vocal ensemble, soloists, and members of the University Symphony attempt to scale one of the summits of Western Civilization, J. S. Bach's monumental Mass in B minor. Note that tickets are only available at the door, "cash or check," just like the Mafia. Suzzallo Library Reading Room, UW campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $5/$8.

KIRKLAND CHORAL SOCIETY

Felix Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah, sung in English. Kirkland Performance Center, 350 Kirkland Ave, 425-893-9900, 8 pm, $12-$18.

SATURDAY JUNE 5

GRETA MATASSA QUARTET

Matassa, a sassy vocalist with a commanding set of pipes, draws from a wide-ranging repertory of tunes. Her haunting duet with bassist Clipper Jones on "Lush Life" a few weeks ago is forever burned in my brain. Tula's, 2214 Second Ave, 443-4221, 9 pm, $12.

SUNDAY JUNE 6

PONTIAC BAY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Named for the prominent peninsula north of Sand Point Magnuson Park, this orchestra performs film scores by Elmer Bernstein and Henry Mancini, including music from The Pink Panther and To Kill a Mockingbird. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the "Main Title" from the Magnificent Seven, but I'll probably have to make do with selections from Lord of the Rings and Gladiator. Kane Hall, UW campus, 364-0907, 7:30 pm, $12/$15.

TUESDAY JUNE 8

DAEJON PHILHARMONIC

I have no idea what this South Korean orchestra sounds like, but given the infrequency of visiting orchestras, I'm very curious. On the program: Tchaikovsky's intensely dramatic Symphony No. 5, Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, and the world premiere of Once Upon a Time by Peter Sang-Wook Jo. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave and Union St, 292-2787, 8 pm, $20-$60.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 9

TOMASZ STANKO QUARTET

For the last several days I've been unable to wrest Stanko's new disc, Suspended Night (ECM), from my CD player. Stanko, a Polish trumpeter, is blessed with a tender, sometimes reedy, sometimes pebbly, yet always lyrical, tone. His supporting trio of young Polish musicians deftly incorporates weird little touches (knocking inside the piano, off-kilter rhythmic figurations, purring bass notes) while remaining firmly cool, urbane, and resolutely straight-ahead. Stanko excels at ballads and mid-tempo numbers, making this gig an excellent dress-sharp date. Not to be missed. The Triple Door, 216 Union St, 838-4333, 7:30 pm, $18.
