FRIDAY FEBRUARY 11

MARK SALMAN

Swaggering through the ultra-Romantic music of Franz Liszt (1811-1886), Salman delivers hits (Totentanz, Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13), transcriptions ("March to the Scaffold" from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique), and rarities ("Czardas Macabre," "Fantasy on Bellini's La Sonnambula"). University Christian Church, 4731 15th Ave NE, 522-0169, 7:30 pm, $10/$20.

KODO DRUMMERS

This Japanese drumming ensemble is a must-see for anyone who loves barrages of big, booming taiko drums. Used in battle centuries ago to intimidate the enemy, these instruments--think of barrels turned on their sides battered with sticks as thick as broom handles--whip up an unforgettable thunder. Also Sat Feb 12 at 8 pm and Sun Feb 13 at 2 pm. Meany Theater, UW Campus, 543-4880, 8 pm, $20-$38.

SEATTLE CHAMBER PLAYERS

Quick, name a famous French avant-garde composer besides Messiaen or Boulez. The SCP serves up a feast of contemporary French music, including Vortex Temporum I and II by the late Spectralist composer Gérard Grisey, Canto by Pascal Dusapin, and Yan Maresz's Circumambulation for solo flute. Amazing soprano Susan Narucki fronts the group for Marc-André Dalbavie's Sextine Cyclus, a setting of Medieval French poetry for soprano and chamber ensemble. Recital Hall at Benaroya, Third Ave and Union St, 286-5052, 8 pm, $12-$20.

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 12

THE STONED GUEST

Not a misprint but the "half-act" dinner theater opera by musical prankster P.D.Q. Bach staged by the Tacoma Opera. Tacoma Elks Club, 1965 S Union Ave, 253-627-7789, 6 pm, $80.

SEATTLE CHORAL COMPANY

Bring on the Italian Baroque: Giacomo Carissimi's oratorio Jephte and morsels of Monteverdi's Mass for Six Voices and Selva morale e spirituale. St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 8398 NE 12th St, Medina, 363-1100, 8 pm, $8-$20

MONDAY FEBRUARY 14

EARTHA KITT

You remember her as Catwoman from the original Batman TV series, but Kitt has been purring cabaret and show tunes in multiple languages for decades. Kitt's sharp, sometimes snarling, always sassy enunciation marks her as a breed unto herself. Meow! Also Tues-Thurs Feb 15-17 at 7:30 pm as well as Fri-Sat Feb 18-19 with sets at 7:30 and 9:30 pm. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 7:30 pm, $29.50-$33.50 (Valentine's Day show is $40.50).

TUESDAY FEBRUARY 15

UW CONTEMPORARY GROUP

Of all his styles, Stravinsky's Neo-Classical period has the most dogs (Concerto for Piano and Winds, Persephoné, etc.), but the archly frenetic, faux-Baroque Pulcinella Suite is not one of them. For the other half of this double bill, the UW Contemporary Group reprises their amusing homage to the Portsmouth Sinfonia, a 1970s collective of variously (un)skilled musicians who spun strange sound words by misplaying the warhorses of classical music. Meany Theater, UW Campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $8/$10.
