THURSDAY APRIL 28
SCORES OF SOUND
Talented classical, jazz, and experimental student players from Cornish and their professors survey music from straight-ahead jazz to spiny electronic music. Legendary jazz trombonist Julian Priester does double duty, leading the mysteriously monikered "Ensemble II" at 11:00 a.m. and the "Fusion Ensemble" at 1:00 p.m. Shortly thereafter, multi-instrumentalist Denney Goodhew helms "Ensemble IV" at 2:00 p.m. I'm most intrigued by the 8:30 p.m. slot held by "Amplified Compositions" which might mean electro-acoustic music, an amplified string quartet, a painting wired with contact microphones, or all three. Also Fri Apr 29 at 11 am. Kerry Hall at Cornish College, 710 E Roy St, 325-6500, 11 am, free.
MUSIC FOR LUNCH
Pianist Jennifer Bowman accompanies soprano Cherie Hughes in songs by Debussy, John Harbison, Copland, and Kurt Weill. Sherman-Clay Piano & Organ, 1624 Fourth Ave, 622-7580, 12:15 pm, free.
SEATTLE SYMPHONY
Conductor Gerard Schwarz leads the band in one of the greatest works of music, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5. The other half the program is devoted to Schumann's neglected melodrama Manfred, op. 115 of which I know nothing since I'm one of the neglecters. Also Sat Apr 30 at 8 pm. Benaroya Hall, Third Ave and Union St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $15-$89.
SATURDAY APRIL 30
FORREST PIERCE
A passel of musicians perform sacred chamber pieces by Forrest Pierce, a reincarnation of Alan Hovhaness. The concert features a song cycle on texts of Rumi, "Your Beloved Is Right Here," as well as "Great Heroic Women and Magnificent Strong Men," a piano sonata based on poetry of the great Sufi mystic Hafiz. St. Ignatius Chapel, Seattle University Campus, 296-5587, 7:30 pm, free-will donation.

SUNDAY MAY 1
THE TYRANT
The Seattle Chamber Players and esteemed tenor John Duykers premiere Paul Dresher's slyly topical chamber opera about "the progressively unhinged world of a tyrant who, unable to physically leave his throne out of fear of being overthrown, unwittingly chooses to experience his kingdom entirely through the medium of sound." Sound familiar? Music by John Zorn and Russian composer Victor Ekimovsky rounds out the program. Also Mon May 2. On the Boards, 100 W Roy St, 217-9888, 7 pm, $12-$20.
TUESDAY MAY 3
PK'S LAB
In this biweekly series, bassist PK explores the seldom-visited terrain shared by propulsive grooves and scorching freely improvised music. This time he's joined by out-jazz drummer Jack Gold and the ever-expansive reedman Michael Monhart. Mr. Spots Chai House, 5463 Leary Way, 297-2424, 8 pm, free.
TIERNEY SUTTON
Refreshingly free of the histrionic, swoop-to-any-note vocals so common in jazz today, Sutton simply sings terrifically--purring, sassing, and swinging as needed through well-chosen standards. Her working trio, a classic aggregation of acoustic piano, bass, and drums, sounds splendid too. Through May 5. Jazz Alley, 2033 Sixth Ave, 441-9729, 7:30 pm, $18.50-$20.50.
