WEDNESDAY 5/23

JULIA HOLTER AND JIB KIDDER

You're going to be seeing and hearing a lot about Julia Holter, a guitarist/vocalist who weaves field recordings and electronic treatments in order to forge gorgeous still-life sonic portraits of mythological dimensions. The plentiful Laurie Anderson comparisons are justified, but Holter adds her own 21st-century haze and glaze to her productions and subtle drones that's to swoon for. Oakland's Jib Kidder (aka Sean Schuster-Craig), on the other hand, works in a much more kinetic, sampledelic manner, as befits someone who claims Plunderphonics innovator John Oswald as an influence. Kidder contributed to Asthmatic Kitty's Library Catalog Music Series with Music for Hypnotized Minds, a functional collection of whimsical, cleverly melodic instrumentals that do what the title says. The man mixes his quirktronica tendencies with a sensitive, murky pop sensibility that falls somewhere between Seefeel and Sentridoh, all with a singing voice scarily similar to Lindsey Buckingham's. Barboza, 8 pm, $13, 21+.

FRIDAY 5/25

UK BREAKS BLOKE HEDFLUX INVADES TRIBAL

Resident Tribal DJ Michael Manahan, who will be celebrating his birthday tonight, has been a fixture in Seattle's electronic-music scene for decades. A regular presence at Hempfest and last year's Occupy activities and a producer for Decibel Festival, he can always be counted on to drop the peace-lovin', transcendental 4/4 dance jams and cosmic space-outs. Helping him to usher in another salubriously sweaty year on the planet is UK breaks producer Hedflux (aka Steve Young). Hedflux traffics in acidic tech-funk that's packed with odd, almost slapsticky distorted textures and uptempo, butt-smacking beats, not unlike Überzone and Si Begg. With Innerflight's Kadeejah Streets and Rob Noble. Re-bar, 10:30 pm, $15, 21+.

SATURDAY 5/26

CAUSE 4 CONCERN'S HARD AND DIRTY DRUM 'N' BASS

The Onset collective of drum 'n' bass obsessives are tapping Stuart Perkins of UK crew Cause 4 Concern to headline tonight's edition of the monthly. Recording for their own C4C label and respected imprints like Renegade Hardware and Virus, Cause 4 Concern produce sinister, 'ard-as-fook, 160ish-bpm slugfests. They turn the club into a bloody war zone—in a good way. With Legion, Flat Black, Eazeinthebreeze, and Sonic MC. Deep Down Lounge, 9:30 pm, $10, 21+.
