When I briefly lived in Columbia City back in 2000, two questions regularly crossed my mind on the drive home each night: First, who decided that Nagel paintings would make ideal signage for nail salons? And second, how long is it going to be before this district is completely gentrified? I'm still puzzled by the first riddle, but the answer to the second one appears to be "about five years." Between the Tully's Coffee, the upscale Italian restaurants, and the preponderance of fliers for dog-walking services and yoga classes, it barely resembles my old neighborhood. The revamping of this beloved coffee shop is also a strong indication that the hipster foothold has been established. A fresh coat of curry-colored paint has warmed up the small, triangular space and the assortment of animal skulls adorning the walls is an intriguing touch. The new owners have kept it functioning as a coffee shop during the day, but have added liquor to the mix in the evenings—an addition that is currently being enjoyed by the cast members from Shakespeare in the Park, who are relaxing after the evening's production of Henry V in nearby Seward Park.
