TUESDAY 12/18

CHRISTMAS SHIP--Annually, every night between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Christmas Ship slowly charts Seattle's many waterways with a string of decorated boats behind it, echoing its cheer of lights. I have never been on the Christmas Ship, but I have fond childhood memories of standing in the cold at night to look upon its glow in the immense black water. If you can't afford a trip on the Christmas Ship, I recommend locating a nice vista where you can at least see the buoys of light. Tonight it will pass Laurelhurst between 7:05 and 7:35 pm, and the shores of Madrona--the site of my childhood memories--between 7:55 and 8:25 pm. Attendance on the Christmas Ship costs $27 for adults and $17 for children (ages 4-12). A portion of all ticket sales benefits the Seattle Times Fund for the Needy. Call 623-1445 to make a reservation.

CELEBRATING PHILANTHROPIC DIVERSITY--This season people are feeling the joy of giving, and no one else has more access to that joy than the super-duper stinking filthy rich. Today the Northwest Development Officers Association December Roundtable meeting will host a discussion titled "Cultures of Philanthropy, a Celebration of Diversity." Representatives from nonprofit organizations will discuss philanthropy from their points of view ("We need it to survive--please, please be charitable, and donate!"), and development professionals from around the Northwest will express theirs ("Hmm, maybe. Okay, here's a little money that will run your entire organization but hardly makes a dent in my many riches."). A lovely time will be had by all. Harborside Restaurant, 1200 Westlake N, 11:30 am, $24 for NDOA members, $29 for nonmembers (seriously!). Call 367-8704 to register.
