Written by and starring Jennifer Westfeldt, Friends with Kids concerns two lifelong friends—one male, one female, both heterosexual and up front about their inability to eroticize the other—who decide to have a kid together. The film’s clearly making a bid to be the When Harry Met Sally for the Apatow generation, complete with cross-gender pussy-and-dick jokes, and it gallops along charmingly, thanks to the stellar cast, led by Westfeldt and Adam Scott, and featuring the majority of the cast of Bridesmaids (Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Chris O’Dowd). The quality falls in the final act, due to some unfortunate and disappointing soapiness. But the whole thing succeeds, primarily as a calling card for the talented Westfeldt, a beautiful, funny woman who belongs in movies and is willing to write and star in her own to prove it. recommended
