Written by and starring Jennifer Westfeldt, Friends with Kids concerns two lifelong friendsâone male, one female, both heterosexual and up front about their inability to eroticize the otherâwho decide to have a kid together. The filmâs clearly making a bid to be the When Harry Met Sally for the Apatow generation, complete with cross-gender pussy-and-dick jokes, and it gallops along charmingly, thanks to the stellar cast, led by Westfeldt and Adam Scott, and featuring the majority of the cast of Bridesmaids (Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Jon Hamm, Chris OâDowd). The quality falls in the final act, due to some unfortunate and disappointing soapiness. But the whole thing succeeds, primarily as a calling card for the talented Westfeldt, a beautiful, funny woman who belongs in movies and is willing to write and star in her own to prove it.
