  • Green Leaf is the kind of place you selfishly want to keep a secret. The Vietnamese food is delicious and exciting and satisfying and good-looking and cheap as hell—a gift of greatness at hole-in-the-wall prices. Try the bahn xeo, a savory crepe-type thing: two giant half-moons made with rice flour and coconut milk, scented and colored with turmeric, crisp outside, moist and chewy inside, filled with tons of bean sprouts, shrimp, and pork (with a bonus heap of cilantro, basil, mint, and lettuce). It's messy, fun, and brings together greasy and fresh in an outstanding way. The beef la lot is extra great here, as is cabbage salad with duck, and green papaya salad with charred, grilled whole shrimp, and lots of other stuff. The servers are lovely and helpful, and the original ID space is much less hole-in-the-wally than the prices would make you expect, while the second Green Leaf, in the basement of the Labor Temple in Belltown, is an elegantly awesome hideaway. Another Belltown location shares a storefront with the night club Tia Lou's. Green Leaf is great.

My favorite spot in the ID

Sometimes, you're done with a meal and just walking out sated when you're already thinking about the next time you'll be returning to the same restaurant. And till that next time comes around, you find yourself raving to friends about how great the food was. Green Leaf is one of those places. Scary-efficient and friendly service (did they just wave to me from the kitchen when I left?) tops everything off (its almost like they're trying to beat some invisible clock). The fresh spring rolls taste..oh so fresh. Not many veggie dishes but I'm sure they would oblige you if you insist. Meat-eaters, you will love this place.

the best vietnamese in seattle

being a viet food junkie is in my genes - having grown up in a vietnamese kitchen and living in vietnam for quite some time, Green Leaf has by far the best Vietnamese food in Seattle. The menu is extensive yet simple & delicious, not trying too hard like it's pretentious tree-ish colleague up the hill where management & sanitation practices are very dubious (had a friend who was abused by owners working there coupled with a few friends who have gotten sick eating the food). The duck noodles is to die for, along with the crepes. Try the tamarind soda, it won't disappoint. The broths are the real deal, with real ingredients & flavor rather than substituting for much cheaper and quicker MSG (a LOT of viet restaurants will do this). My mom is extremely picky, somehow able to tell if a kitchen has clean practices or not and this is one of the very few places she'll go eat out at for Vietnamese food in Seattle. Moms know best! I love Green Leaf!

MMMmmmm

For some reason, my boyfriend and I are Vietnamese-food addicts. International District standards Pho Bac and the Green Leaf keep the two of us alive. Others can try, but the Green Leaf gets things DONE. Fresh, super-friendly, and sooo cheap (I'd encourage them to charge more - but then I wouldn't be able to eat there as often). You really can't go wrong with anything, but make sure to order the Green Mango Salad (grilled shrimp are delish, but whatever suits your fancy will be as good) and the spring rolls. Their Vietnamese pancake is delightful, as is the lemongrass beef vermicelli bowl. But then, I have yet to try anything that wasn't awesome.

fresh spring rolls and more

We just got back from dinner at Green Leaf ... and it was exquisite! We had the fresh spring rolls and the vegetable spring rolls - both fantastic ... and pretty presentation also! I had the lemongrass chicken which was superb; spicy, full of flavor. My husband had the last dish on the menu, No. 54. It was a little confusing; seemed to be an Asian dish with a colonial French bit thrown in ... and he ate it all! We had 2 entrees, 2 spring roll appies and 2 beers for under $40. And the servers were helpful and sweet-natured. Will definitely go back as tere were many interesting items on the menu!

Great Food, Good Service

When the mood hits me and my belly is asking for Vietnamese food a couple places come to mind. Should I go to Tamarind Tree or Green Leaf? While the food at Tamarind Tree is pretty good, I have always enjoyed my experience at Green Leaf more. The food is as authentic as you can get in lily-white Seattle and worth the effort to find this cozy space in the ID.
