This place warms the cockles of my cold, cold heart.

Martin's off Madison is awesome. It's got some crazy over-the-top "80s fantasy" decor (complete with tornado fireplace!) gorgeous waiters in black Utilikilts and boots, and serves a mean Champagne cocktail. Yes, the crowd tends to be older gay men, so if people over 40 frighten you, you may want to give it a pass, poor dear. Ahh...I remember the days when I thought getting loaded and hooking up was the height of excitement too, so you just enjoy that while you can sweetie. Come back to Martin's when you grow up a little.

I love going to Martin's for a swanky drink and a loungey show. The crowd is welcoming (even if you're a--HORRORS!--boy/girl couple, like we are). If you love a true lounge experience and are not so terrified of your own mortality you can't be in a room with over-40s, you may end up loving it as much as I do.

Clearly favored by the literate

When I first moved to Seattle in 1986 there was a great piano bar on 15th near the QFC, or Sorry Charlie's. Martins off Madison is a piano bar to rival the former, and the previous person who thought everyone was old should go to Charlie's and hang out with the puking college crowds. Martins employs long-time Seattle pianists, has great atmosphere, and clearly is resonating with those that truly keep a good bar/restaurant alive - staff from other bars and restaurants, musicians, artists, ADULTS!

Great Piano Bar

All I can say to Il Diva is that someday you will be over 40, or gasp, even over 50. It happens to everyone, unless you are fortunate (?) enough to die in a car crash or from a drug overdose when you're 25 and wrinkle free. That said, Martin's Off Madison is a place Seattle is lucky to have. Unlike New York or some other large cities, Seattle is piano-bar deprived, and it's great to have a place to hear real human beings playing a real piano. And not the dueling pianos shtick either, but soulful, classy standards and jazz tunes. Incidentally, I am not gay, but I like Martin's for the music, the reasonably priced drinks, the friendly (if noisy) atmosphere, and yes, maybe even for the fact that if you're not 25 no one will sneer at you. That alone in Seattle is a novelty.

not the seawolf any more

let me just say what everyone is thinking. this is really a senior citisen home mess hall and not a bar! it is where you go if you played estel getty's boyfriend on golden girls and now you are into boys. i am really serious and people can back me up on that! i really cant stand the spicy food too and they should tone that down if they really want people to eat that!! my vote goes to julias which is better for erotic people watching. this is not "classy" unless you consider gay jene hackman to be classy and sexy!! I DO NOT.

So So...

Our first impression of the place was nice and cozy. Live music was great. It was not too noisy. We could actually make conversation while the music was playing. Service was so, so. One of our wine glass had finger marks all over it. And the other wine glass had finger and lip marks which we asked for a replacement. Not many selection of beer. We were kind of disappointed with the food. On the phone with the restaurant we were told that it was Mediterranean restaurant. Turned out that only one or two entree in the menu could be called Mediterranean. Food was so so but we did like the Yukon Chips. All in all I would say it's a good place to hangout while listening to live music. But I wouldn't consider it for a nice dinner outting.

Thumpers, It Ain't

...and that may be a good thing. Food quality is above-average to very good for a gay bar (great nachos). The wait staff seems to turn over quite a bit, but they're pleasant and trainable. The dining room/piano lounge has a lot of hard surfaces, so it can be very noisy and difficult to carry on a conversation with the person next to you. The actual bar space sucks (sort of Elite-lite). But for late night music and a good cocktail that won't break the bank, Marty provides a genial place to park it for a couple of hours.

Comfortable & classy

I've eaten and/or drank here at least 10 times and everything on the menu is well-prepared. It's where the classy gays and lesbians hang out (at least in the dining room). One slight complaint: the tables are about a foot too long for intimate conversation.
