Headshot
Thailand | 105 min
After catching a bullet to the head while impersonating a Buddhist monk, a former cop turned hit man discovers that he can only see things upside down. How’s that for high concept? Pen-ek Ratanaruang, a proven master at the genre mashup (his best, 2003’s Last Life in the Universe, somehow hopscotched between five movies simultaneously), plays things relatively straight here… by his standards, anyway. Blending frigid long takes with quick bursts of violence, the director successfully captures the mind-set of the tortured protagonist, a character whose growing sense of spirituality meshes uneasily with the realities of working for a crime boss named, well, Demon. Weird, wild, and pretty wonderful. (ANDREW WRIGHT)
Director: Pen-ek Ratanaruang
