The Heartland Cafe specializes in decent, gut-filling Midwestern comfort food with farm-implements-on-the-wall decor. The star here is the homemade apple fritters at breakfast—racquetball-sized orbs, fried crispy on the outside, dense and bready on the inside, narcotically delicious. But the star of the Heartland Cafe is the Benbow Room—go back through the cafe, bear starboard, and find yourself in the chart room of a Spanish galleon (via 1950, which means burgundy vinyl upholstery with gold-coin buttons). Fishing nets! Treasure maps! An inland sea with listless goldfish! A lighting effect that defies description! It’s the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland, minus the children, plus booze. Ahoy!

Artichoke Pasta!

If you ever felt like a jerk for having an Italian re$taurant make you pasta & cheese - might I suggest this (new? seasonal?) item. Yes, you can order a half order; yes, you could share it with another, but if you are a greedy hog like me, you are also now on your couch.
"Artichokes, spinach, zucchini, roasted red peppers, served over linguini with a light cream sauce, served with crostinis." - PS - now is the season to ask for extra zucchini without anyone batting their eyelashes at you.

get the Veggie omelette w/biscuit

the Veggie omelette - which includes caramalized onions (the importance of which I cannot stress enough) - to which you can add Zucchini! (the importance of which I cannot stress enough) - might be the best thing I have eaten in the last couple weeks. Go, Seattleites, go!
