Republican Vote

On January 3, the five-member commission charged with redistricting King County down from 13 council districts to 9, unveiled four initial proposals. One of the configurations--proposed by the Republicans--seems like a classic attempt to gerrymander, sucking up Democrats from D Julia Patterson's current seat into the heavily Republican rural southeastern part of the county. The plan would give the Rs four of the nine redrawn districts instead of three. Suspiciously, the district would stretch all the way from Puget Sound to the foothills of the Cascades. Perhaps even a bigger sign of Republican chicanery: The carved out district would look something like an elephant. NANCY DREW
