It's My Party

In the spirit of High Fidelity, the following is a list of the Top Five things I missed while I was on "vacation":

5. Dead Moon drummer Andrew Loomis. For the first time ever, in my entire life, I spent an evening in Portland's legendary drink shack Club 21, and regular extraordinaire Loomis was -- OHMYGOD! -- nowhere in sight. All was not lost, however. I did win nine dollars at video poker.

4. Leif Garrett appearing in all his woeful Behind the Music glory at the Showbox. Long hair? Check. Doo rag shamelessly concealing bald pate? Check. Apparent intoxication? Check.

3. Leif Garrett hanging out at the Nitelite after the show, bolstering his increasingly apparent intoxication while the typical Friday night crowd looked on.

2. The Melvins' Dale Crover, who brought Garrett to Seattle, wondering a little too loudly what they'd have to do to top that amazing inspiration: "What'll we do next -- bring Scott Baio out on the road?!"

1. My doctor's appointment. I slept through it.

And now, the Top Five things I didn't miss while on vacation, mostly because I spent part of it in town:

5. The Sub Pop 12th Anniversary bash at I-SPY, featuring Zen Guerrilla, Murder City Devils, the Makers, Beachwood Sparks, Gluecifer, and Otto. Though Jonathan Poneman was a gracious host and even gave me a ride home after three groups of assholes stole each and every one of my fucking cabs, I still have to say that Otto, well, sucked. I expect to hear them all over the End by summer. While Beachwood Sparks didn't suck, they were pretty boring, providing this year's Rebecca Gates and Thornetta Davis portion of Sub Pop anniversary parties gone past. The Makers were the Makers, with the exception of Mike's furry ensemble, which reached new heights of rock star grandeur. Gluecifer -- what can I say? I'm a sucker for matching shirts, even if they're stretching over gyrating jelly-bellies. As usual, the Murder City Devils were terrific and we're glad to have 'em back, if only for a few days before they wing it over to Europe for a month-long tour with Zeke. Zen Guerrilla topped off the night, but by that time I was too celebrated-out to pay any serious attention to anything but the insides of my eyelids.

4. Edge of Quarrel, screened at Sit & Spin. This locally produced film about a war between punks and straight-edge kids features several Seattle bands, and much to my surprise, Derek Fudesco driving and Spencer Moody running.

3. I blacked this one out.

2. Finding out that in their paranoia over The Stranger's new Portland publication, the Willamette Week is in negotiations to buy The Rocket. BAM Media must be pissing themselves with joy.

1. At the Fastbacks/ Gas Huffer/Catheters show, learning that Gas Huffer's Tom Price had gone to high school with Catheters guitarist Lars' MOTHER.
