All the Maddin tics you know and love are here: retro black-and-white sensibilities, weird characters dancing around their S&M obsessions, and all sorts of nifty analog visual effects. Keyhole is about a gangster named Ulysses—SYMBOLISM!—wandering around a haunted house and encountering the people who live (or don’t live) there, like the naked old man chained to a bed and the guy who is either masturbating or playing a dice game in the closet. This isn’t Maddin’s best work; some of Keyhole feels a little too weird-for-weird’s-sake. But even a lesser Maddin effort is still a cause for celebration. (PAUL CONSTANT)
