  • It's less well known than the nearby Gordito's, but La Botana offers a different kind of Mexican dining experience, with sit-down house specialties like chicken in mole. Takeout food is good too, and includes tacos, tamales, and tortas. (Try one filled with cochinita pibil, tangy long-cooked pork.) La Botana opens early (at 10 am), so it's a good place to catch Mexican breakfast: eggs with shredded beef (machaca), chorizo, and huevos rancheros.

Agreed too

Great little neighborhood gem. Delicious Mexican food. Been there twice, both times thought my meal was great.

Plus they have Univision on the TV! Bare-bones Mexican done straight-up well. Skip Chupacabra and Gorditos and go here.

The Best

This isn't the best Mexican restaurant in the world, but it's the best north of the Ship Canal, I'll bet. Bare-bones cheap decor, just the way it should be. But the food is AWESOMELY DELICIOUS and cheap as dirt. Eat here, you won't be sorry -- unless you LIKE dumb hippies or oceans of melted cheddar cheese.
