Green star Le Gourmand (Ballard)

425 NW Market St
Seattle, WA 98107

Website

Le Gourmand is beautiful, with cream leather chairs, chandeliers like lotus snowballs, an enormous mirror in its own mirrored frame, and the door to the kitchen softly, richly, pristinely upholstered. If the tables at the room's center are snug, occupants can feel lucky to be there, like jewels crowded together in a pretty setting. Bruce Naftaly, chef and co-owner of Le Gourmand, deserves a lifetime achievement award, if not outright canonization. Since 1985, he's been quietly, honorably using local and seasonal ingredients here in the manner that was recently, loudly hailed as revolutionary. But lifetime achievement sounds tired, while his care with Northwest ingredients and his insight into French techniques remains amazing. For very fine dining in Seattle, Le Gourmand is a very, very fine choice.

Seattle's best restaurant ? Not quite.

Everything I had read about this place made it sound phenomenal, so I was really looking forward to a great experience there. Unfortunately, I left not only disappointed, but shocked that such poor service and mediocre food could be served at a place generally considered one of Seattle's finest culinary treasures. Half-way through my meal, I began to look around to see if anyone else was experiencing what I was, and was relieved to overhear a nearby table discussing whether or not they should actually get up and leave - even though they were only a few courses into their chef's tasting menu. I got the distinct impression that we were at the mercy of the wait staff, which was hardly ever at our table. My bank account is still recovering, and I certainly won't be returning, or recommending the place to anyone I care about. Perhaps it was just a bad night, but in a city of great restaurants, a professionally-run establishment that charges what it does needs to make every night a great night, and every customer a preferred customer.

Totally Agree

We love the puppets. I mean seriously, have a sense of humor or daresay...style. We roll into Le Gourmand on occasion and have exquisite experiences each time. The bar next door - Sambar - is an informal yet in some ways just as stylish and elegant extension of Le Gourmand - not even next door - attached with a walk way. The french fare at Le Gourmand is second to none in the city. Bruce is a legend in the farmers market community - we see him at the Ballard Market on occasion. Great people, great food...enjoy.

Amazing

Very traditional, very real French (not Franco-American garbage), very very fresh, perfect ingredients, great dishes. Genius wine steward. Your wallet will catch on fire, and you may contract gout from the richness of the food, but it's worth it if you got it. I think this is Seattle's best restaurant, certainly Seattle's best traditional restaurant.
