The French have their pain au chocolat, we Americans love our hoagies and hot dogs, but you know what really belongs inside bread? Potato. Leave it to the Russians to bring the hot starch-on-starch action. At Piroshki on Broadway, the charmingly grouchy Russian lady behind the counter will give you a delicious hedgehog-sized bun with a doughy, buttery, sweet crust and stuffed with all sorts of savory fillings. Potatoes! Possibly with cabbage, or corned beef. If you go in more than once (and you will), the counter lady will probably recognize you. If she tells you that something is fresh from the oven, take it. The spinach, mushroom, and cheese piroshki is probably my favorite—it's quick and hot and gooey, both sweet and savory, and costs $4. One piroshki will warm up your stomach for hours, but they taste so good, you can probably eat two. And that's still <10.
