Restaurant Details

  • Usually parked at 2nd and Pike, the pig-shaped truck Maximus/Minimus (from the people of Beecher’s Handmade Cheese) serves righteous pulled pork sandwiches offered either Maximus (made with a spicy sauce of Hefeweizen, peppers, and lapsang souchong smoked tea) or Minimus (with a sweet sauce of tamarind). (A tip from their Twitter: “If Maximus isn’t spicy enough, ask for some ‘hurt.’”) Also on offer: A deliciously crisp slaw (julienned cabbage, shavings of fennel root, and bits of apple) and an unrecommended vegetarian sandwich, which has been called a “barley sloppy joe.” The brick-and-mortar Max's, at a whopping 11,000 square feet, is appropriately referred to as the truck's "mothership."

No longer on hiatus, it seems

Broke fast there last Thursday at 2nd & Pike. (They also showed up in Fremont on Friday night for Honk Fest West.) Mad props for the offering of Mexican Coke. I had the pork sandwich with minimus sauce and cheese, which was delicious; good choice of bun, but I think it might have been nicer if it were a bit toasted. I didn't have the fried chips but rather the minimus slaw, which was freaking transcendent. So yummy!

The truck itself is awesome! The person out in front as a mobile cashier is smart!
People are drawn to the pig like moths to a flame but the sammies have no soul. The meat is dry and lifeless and the groovy sides are lackluster. This outdoor stand has a chance to be great. Rework the product asap. Take a trip to peco's barbecue and watch very carefully

Just ate there for the first time today, did not disappoint

I had the Maximus pork sandwich with cheese and a side of spicy slaw. Total cost: $8.50

The pulled pork sandwich concept is definitely gussied up here for the downtown lunch crowd, but with good results. Nice texture, flavorful sauce, and who doesn't love Beecher's cheese? Slaw was OK. If you don't like cilantro I'd say pass on it (I do like cilantro, so I thought it was good).

The price is fair but not exactly cheap. I got there at 11:45 on a cloudy day and only waited about three minutes for my food. Their system of having one person take your order and another take your money seems pretty efficient.

Good sandwich, tasty beverage, sad sides

I've had the pork sandwich, minimus, and it was excellent. The hibiscus nectar was good as well. The slaw was a disappointment as it was mainly lettuce with little in the way of sauce or taste.

Be prepared to stand in line on a sunny day but the sandwich is worth the wait.
