Green star Moonlight Cafe (Central District)

1919 S Jackson St
Seattle, WA 98144
(206) 322-3378

Lindy West says: “I love meat like I love my own family (I mean, not exactly—I avoid eating humans, most particularly ones I love), but sometimes, through a weird confluence of perfect spices and glutinous magic, fake meat is better than actual meat. This is the case with the Moonlight Cafe in the Central District. The Vietnamese veggie (eggplant hot pot), soy (sesame tofu), and fake-meat dishes (vermicelli with grilled pork) are so good, there’s no reason to stray to their formerly sentient counterparts, though a bona fide meat menu is offered. The vegetarian appetizer platter—a mountain of DIY salad rolls stuffed with the best fake pork in town—is totally enough for two, and you get to roll it all up in dripping, bursting bundles and shove it messily in your face like the ravenous carnivorous beast that you are. Fuck yes.” Also: cheap!

Hands down, my favorite restaurant in Seattle

Theres two menus (meat, non-meat) so everyone is happy. Its truly a vegetarian paradise - pages upon pages of tasty delicious goodness. Their lemongrass "beef" and General Tsao's "chicken" is amazing. Very good pho as well. If you want to save a few bucks, hit them up at lunch because they have specials which are under $7 bucks. Ridiculously cheap for generous portions including rice. Nice folks who run the place too, try it out if you haven't.

Duplicity

A Vietnamese restaurant with a deliciously split personality, Moonlight Cafe offers a full traditional (ie: meaty) menu in addition to a full vegetarian menu, cooked in separate kitchens! The faux-meat offerings at Moonlight are a cut above the bland soy-chicken pieces of their contemporaries and their menu is incredibly extensive. You could eat a different entree every day and not be finished for almost a year. Some dishes are far better than others but one can't be disappointed with their epic appetizer tray which could be a meal for 2-3 in and of itself.
