CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 4/13

SEATTLE SYMPHONY -- The dark, heavily percussive music of Christopher Rouse has improved as he goes along; what once seemed just splash and thrash has boiled down to terse, aggressive music-making. Der gerettete Alberich, a Fantasy for Solo Percussionist and Orchestra based on Wagnerian themes (oh, that Alberich), promises more of the same; even my antipathy toward soloist Evelyn Glennie isn't dimming my enthusiasm. The rest of the evening contains Britten's Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes and Beethoven's Symphony No. 5, which may even seem fresh again after its magnificent use in Mohsen Makhmalbaf's The Silence. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 7:30 pm, also Fri-Sat April 14-15, 8 pm, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, $10-$67.

FRIDAY 4/14

ZEPHYRUS -- The galant rococo style that filled the gap between Baroque and Classical periods has never been hugely popular, but why blame these composers just because they were flanked by Defining Moments? On its own terms this pleasing music can be quite enjoyable, especially from such masters of the genre as Toeschi, Stefan, Muthel, and J. C. F. Bach (J. S.'s 16th offspring, for those keeping track). Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, 325-7066 or www.halcyon.com/emg, 8 pm, $14 students/$18 seniors/$23 general.

SATURDAY 4/15

PIANO PAIRINGS -- This evening of music lectures and performances (following a student performance by Kelly Wyse) is titled Nancarrow & Computers, Custer & Sitting Bull. Of the two guest performers, Trimpin and Kyle Gann, the more curiously named is likely a computer program that will play some of Nancarrow's brilliant, dazzlingly impossible Studies for Player Piano. Gann, in addition to being a superb critic, is a fine composer of rhythmically rousing, sonically pleasing intonation music. The one not to miss this week. PONCHO Concert Hall, Cornish College of the Arts, 710 E Roy, 726-5066, 6:30 pm, $5 students, seniors, and Cornish Alumni/$10 general.

SUNDAY 4/16

NORTHWEST CHAMBER ORCHESTRA -- A lively afternoon of chamber classics, and if they're all familiar, at least for once you get to hear Ravel's Quartet in F without Debussy at its side. Instead, it's bookended by Beethoven's Sonata No. 7 in C for Piano and Violin and Schumann's Piano Quintet in E flat. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 343-0445, 2:30 pm, $22.50 students & seniors/$24.50 general.
