CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

SATURDAY 4/22

PIANO PAIRINGS -- The last installment of this series goes by the simple name Solos. Without knowing pianists Dave Peck and Robin Holcomb (or, for that matter, student recitalists Erik Koski and Glenn Slayden), we'll assume they are all respectably virtuoso players. No word on the program, so expect anything from Romantic heavings to minimalist churnings. PONCHO Concert Hall, Cornish College of the Arts, 710 E Roy, 726-5066, 6:30 pm, $5 students, seniors, and Cornish alumni/$10 general.

TUESDAY 4/25

VLADIMIR FELTSMAN -- Speaking of virtuosi.... Joke all you want about the excesses of Russian pianists -- at their best, they're scintillating. And Feltsman, if not the best, is certainly good enough. The evening kicks off with one of the keyboard's supreme masterpieces, Haydn's Sonata No. 49 in E flat, with its marvelous slow movement and tender cantabile that eventually bursts with emotion. After a short visit to Mt. Brahms (Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24) comes a feast of Chopin: Two Polonaises, Op. 26; the Barcarolle in F sharp, Op. 60; and the dreamy, rambling Ballade No. 4 in F. Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 8 pm, $27.
