CLASSICAL

FRIDAY 5/19

SONI VENTORUM WIND QUINTET--Mozart's charming Octet (huh?) in C and Gounod's Petite Symphonie make for a small bill, but so does the ticket price. Brechemin Auditorium, Music 126, UW campus, 685-8384, $4 students & seniors/$6 general.

SATURDAY 5/20

SEATTLE PHILHARMONIC--A world premiere of the latest from one of Seattle's finest composers, Janice Giteck. Tikkun-Mending sounds from its title to continue Giteck's spiritual, enchanting, Eastern-tinged music-making. After the intermission comes a little ditty you may know: Debussy's La Mer. Washington Middle School, 2101 S Jackson St, 7:30 pm; Meany Hall, UW campus, 628-0888, Sun May 21, 3 pm, $8 students & seniors/$21 general.

SUNDAY 5/21

NORTHWEST SINFONIETTA--I don't know Bach's Cantata Ich will den Kreuzstab gerne tragen, BWV 56, but it must be a smaller one; the only singer listed for this concert is baritone Clayton Brainerd. (The earliest published schedule I have lists the piece to be performed as Cantata No. 56; the most recent as Ich habe genug, BWV 56; but Ich habe genug is BWV 82, so I'm sticking, perhaps foolishly, with the old report.) After such confusions, it's nice to stick to the well-trod and familiar: Beethoven's unassuming (well, for him) Symphony No. 4 (hey, you follow up "Eroica") and Webern's lush (well, for him) Five Movements for String Orchestra, Op. 5. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 292-ARTS, 3 pm, $14 students & seniors/$20 general.

SEATTLE CHAMBER PLAYERS--A screening of Robert Flaherty's classic document of survival, Nanook of the North, accompanied by Stanley Silverman's score for the film. But the "fillers" are more substantial that you'd expect: Schnittke's Serenade, and Variations of American Children's Songs by Hanns Eisler, who was thrown out of this country by the HUAC for his Communist politics. I mention this fact because it's more interesting than any of the bland music I've heard from him. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 286-5052, 7 pm, $15 students & seniors/$20 general.

MONDAY 5/22

My, but today's a busy day over at the University of Washington! Is your thing student singers struggling to hit the high note, or are you just really, really cheap? Then you want the free Voice Division Recital, kicking off at 7 pm. Perhaps you'd prefer a mass of student voices straining as one, in which case the University Chorale concert might be more to your liking; highlights include Mozart's Vesperae Solenned de Confessore, K. 339, as well as brief pieces by Vaughan Williams, Copland, Ives, and Thome (whose Unseen Buds gives the performance its title). Still not right? Why listen to heavenly voices when you can have the hellish, martial onslaught of a clanging Percussion Ensemble? Rejoice--they've thought of you as well.

VOICE DIVISION RECITAL--Brechemin Auditorium, Music 126, UW campus, 685-8384, 7 pm, free.

UNIVERSITY CHORALE--Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 8 pm, $4 students & seniors/$6 general.

PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE--Meany Studio, UW campus, 543-4880, 8 pm, $4 students & seniors/$6 general.
