CLASSICAL

by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 6/1

UW CONTEMPORARY MUSIC GROUP--An unspecified program--well, unspecified beyond being "contemporary," of course. But this ensemble is usually a good bet. Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 8 pm, $4 students & seniors/$6 general.

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--The prize for Ludicrous P.R. Gimmick of the Year probably will go to Colin Matthews, who just last month premiered his "Pluto"; not a self-sufficient work, but designed as a "completion" of The Planets. Holst, you see, wrote his famously overplayed score before our ninth planet was discovered. No such additions here, just the score that's been sufficient for more than 80 years now. Classical Music Con Artists of the Century, though, are undoubtedly the proponents of the "New" Shostakovich. When listening to his Symphony No. 15, please don't attempt decoding it into a literal-minded portrait of Stalin's Cabinet members marching the innocent off to the gallows, or whatever; just accept it as an odd, ironic, and quite lovely portrait of death. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or seattlesymphony.org, Thurs June 1 at 7:30 pm, Sat June 3 at 8 pm, and Sun June 4 at 2 pm, $10-$67.

FRIDAY 6/2

SEATTLE LESBIAN AND GAY CHORUS--One of the most redundant organizations in music history nonetheless celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Specializing in folk-song arrangements, humor, and "cute" songs about Washington state (e.g., it rains a lot, people drink a lot of coffee). Classical? Well, it's a slow week, so it's either mention this or Lou Reed, who's also playing Benaroya. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 292-ARTS, Fri June 2 at 8 pm, Sat June 3 at 2:30 pm, $12 students & seniors/$16 general.

RADIO SHOWS

by Jason Pagano

THURSDAY 6/1

SOUNDPRINT--This week: "Einstein's Blunder II." Feeling insignificant? Listen in as people ponder questions such as, "Will the universe expand forever, or will it ultimately turn around and collapse?" and take your self-hating nihilism to a whole 'nother level. KUOW 94.9 FM, 7:30 pm.

SATURDAY 6/3

LIVE ROOM--Blue Spark play country- and blues-inflected pop. KCMU 90.3 FM, 8 pm.

SOUNDTRACK CINEMA--This week's program focuses on Andrew Powell's classic score from 1985's Ladyhawke, starring Matthew Broderick as "Phillipe," the lovable thief and Charles Borromel as "Insane Prisoner #2." KING 98.1 FM, 10 pm.

SONARCHY--Jack Straw Productions presents a condensed version of "N30," based on Christopher DeLaurenti's field recordings made during the WTO protests. N30, of course, being shorthand for the date of the sociopolitical street theater and what-have-you. KCMU 90.3 FM, 11 pm.

MARINERS VS. PADRES--Baseball on the radio: Pastoral. Overblown. American. KIRO 710 AM, 1:35 pm.

TUESDAY 6/6

COUNTERSPIN--Produced by Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (www.fair.org), CounterSpin provides critical examination of the week's major news stories, exposing corporate media outlets as the biased, money-driven mouthpieces they so often are. Past guests have included Noam Chomsky, Susan Faludi, and Norman Solomon. KBCS 91.3 FM, 6:30 pm.
