CLASSICAL

THURSDAY 6/8

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Two of Stravinsky's masterworks. It's impossible now, of course, to recapture the shock that Rite of Spring generated at its riotous 1913 premiere, but its brilliance and excitement are undiminished; this is one of the few "landmark" works that hasn't aged a bit. The "opera-oratorio" Oedipus Rex remains one of the oddest of Igor's ideas: a text based on Greek myth, written by Cocteau, translated into Latin (to keep the audience's emotional involvement at a minimum), and performed by a static cast complete with narrator. The story grinds out along its predetermined path; the music grimly follows suit, in a propulsive and riveting fashion if handled properly. Expect a lot of Star Trek geeks, unfortunately; John de Lancie does the narrating honors. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm; Fri June 9, 8 pm. $10-$67.

SATURDAY 6/10

CITY MUSIC--The final concert of the year for this benefit concert series features violinist Stephen Daniels, cellist Terence Muir, and pianist Rachel Matthews. The trio performs Cowell's Trio in Nine Short Movements, Schubert's Piano Trio in E flat major, Op. 100 (the lovely slow movement that was played to death in Kubrick's Barry Lyndon), and A Still of Mirrors by Kenneth Frazelle, whom I've not heard. Based on the good press afforded his "emotional" and "lyrical" folk-themed work, though, I'm guessing I'd prefer he sounded more like his teacher, Roger Sessions. The proceeds go to the Seattle chapter of PFLAG; appropriate, given recent theories on Schubert's sexuality and Cowell's infamous and appalling prison sentence. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 418-1066, 8 pm, $14 students & seniors/$18 general.

ORCHESTRA SEATTLE AND SEATTLE CHAMBER SINGERS--Another season-ender finds these ensembles bowing out with Mendelssohn's Elijah. Now, I admire Mendelssohn as much as the next guy, but am I the only person who finds this tribute to Handel just too, well, Handelian to love? Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 682-5208, 8 pm, $5-$30.

TUESDAY 6/13

MARK POLISHOOK--CWU music director Polishook is the subject of this "Meet the Composer" installment. Following a lecture (and refreshments!), he will show a video of his filmed opera, Seed of Sarah, an electronic chamber piece based upon a Holocaust memoir. Jack Straw Productions, 4261 Roosevelt Way NE, 634-0919 or 789-3628, 7:30 pm, free.

FRIDAY 6/9

MARINERS VS. GIANTS--Love it or hate it, interleague play is here to stay. The Giants are in a brand new stadium that boasts the attraction of extremely nearby water, so when a player hits a home run, it falls in the ocean! Wowee! This is a good chance for the Mariners to pick up a few wins because the Giants aren't that great this year. KIRO 710 AM, 7:35 pm.

SATURDAY 6/10

THIS AMERICAN LIFE--This show features the true story of two Missourians who move back to the small town they grew up in decades ago. Their attempts to improve things about the town result in much hatred toward them. There will also be stories of do-gooders near the Rwandan massacres. KUOW 94.9 FM, 11:00 am.

SUNDAY 6/11

HORNPIPE--Music from the Celtic regions of Ireland and Scotland. Featuring jigs, reels, songs, and of course, hornpipes! "Buali isteach chugainn gach Domhnach is cloisfidh tu ceol den scoth o na tiortha Ceilteacha." That's Gaelic, by the way. KCBS 91.3 FM, 4:00 pm.

MONDAY 6/12

THE BEST AMBIENCE--Music from the motherland. African pop, folk, you name it. They play stuff from all over the continent, so be ready for anything and everything! KCMU 90.3 FM, 6:00 pm.

TUESDAY 6/13

COUNTERSPIN--This show highlights censored news stories, exposes inaccuracies and misinformation on the part of mainstream media, and shines a spotlight on corporate influence, racism, sexism, and homophobia in the news. KCBS 91.3 FM, 6:30 pm.
