CLASSICAL
by Bruce Reid

THURSDAY 2/8

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Well here's a cheery program. Mahler's Symphony No. 6, "Tragic," with its writhing strings, hammered cowbells, and grim march, fully earns its nickname, but it's blue skies and sunny days compared to the composer's Kindertotenlieder. I've said before that Schwarz doesn't do full justice to Mahler; good thing for this program, lest the cream of Seattle's society crop be driven to mass suicide. Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 215-4747 or www.seattlesymphony.org, 7:30 pm, $10-$69. Also Sat Feb 10, 8 pm, and Sun Feb 11, 2 pm (Symphony No. 6 only).

FRIDAY 2/9

SEATTLE CLASSICAL PLAYERS--All Mozart, all the time--surprisingly enough, a first for this group. Two early symphonies (No. 1 in E-flat and No. 16 in C), plus the Flute Concertos in G, K. 313, and D, K. 314. Blessed Sacrament Church, 5049 Ninth Ave NE, 325-7066, 8 pm, $16 suggested donation.

SONI VENTORUM WIND QUINTET--It doesn't get more boisterous than Danzi's Quintet in d, Op. 68, No. 3; more classically refined than Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik, Op. 24, No. 2; or more somber that Nielsen's Quintet, Op. 43. Milhaud's Cheminée du Roi René I don't know, but it's in good company. Brechemin Auditorium, School of Music Room 126, UW campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, $10 general/$8 students & seniors.

SATURDAY 2/10

PORTLAND YOUTH PHILHARMONIC--Members of the Seattle Symphony lend the kids a hand in this package of warhorses: Rossini's Cenerentola Overture (lively); Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 (sad); and Strauss' An Alpine Symphony (um, Straussian). Benaroya Hall, Taper Auditorium, 362-2300, 1 pm, $5-$32.

SUNDAY 2/11

ANDR: FERIANTE--Original guitar compositions and poetry that, while sensitively played, positively ooze romantic schmaltz. Which, to be fair, might be just what you're looking for the weekend before Valentine's Day. Benaroya Hall, Nordstrom Recital Hall, 292-ARTS, 7 pm, $20.

GEORGE BARTH AND TAMARA FRIEDMAN--A great collection of fourhanded fortepiano works--Mozart's Sonata in F, K. 497; Beethoven's Eroica Variations in E-flat, Op. 35; and Schubert's "Grand Duo" Sonata in C, Op. 140--presented by this pair of pianists. Seattle Asian Art Museum, 1400 E Prospect, Volunteer Park, 726-6088, 2 pm, $20 general/$16 seniors/$10 students.

SEATTLE PRO MUSICA--This program is something of a greatest hits package from previous Seattle Pro Musica concerts, but the standards of this fine group ensure an intriguing collection nonetheless: Lauridsen's Fire Madrigals, Pärt's Magnificat, Ferko's Hildegard Motets, and older pieces by Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and Hildegard herself. Town Hall, 1119 Eighth Ave, 781-2766, 3 pm, $12-$18.

SWING YEARS AND BEYOND--Celebrating 20 years as the number one radio program among wistful, wine-soaked nostalgists, Swing Years brings you five hours of swing, big band, and instrumental and vocal jazz from the Golden Age of Radio every Saturday night. KUOW 94.9 FM, 7 pm.

SUNDAY 2/11

STREET SOUNDS--DJ Kutfather presides over the only two hours of radio dedicated to non-commercial hiphop in the entire city of Seattle. KCMU 90.3 FM, 6 pm.

PILE DRIVER--Between high-speed Internet connections, high-sugar diets, and getting high in the parking lot behind the Safeway, today's teenagers live life at a dizzying pace. Fortunately there's Pile Driver, revisiting all the week's developments from the world of professional wrestling. KFNK 104.9 FM, 10 pm.

GRATEFUL DEAD HOUR--I was a suburban, middle class neo-hippie for three full years in my mid-teens: sandals, patchouli oil, blank tapes... so embarrassing. However, I'm not ashamed to tell you that the 6/28/74 Boston Garden show, re-broadcast tonight, is, in fact, quite good. KBCS 91.3 FM, 8 pm.
