CLASSICAL
by Chris DeLaurenti

THURSDAY 5/24

LORI GOLDSTON--Black Cat Orchestra cellist performs original scores for early surrealist and dada films: Marcel Duchamp's Anémic Cinéma (France, 1926) and Germaine Dulac's arresting Seashell and Clergyman (France, 1927) scripted by Goth icon Antonin Artaud. Steeped in klezmer, Turkish, and other exotic musics, Goldston is one of the most lyrical cellists in town, so this will be a treat. Little Theater, 610 19th Ave E, 675-2055, 7 & 9 pm, $7.

UW SYMPHONIC BAND--Some dismiss the symphonic band tradition (think of marching bands playing symphonies instead of "Tequila"), but these ensembles thrive on complex, challenging music. Joining forces with the UW Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, the Symphonic Band presents a passel of percussive music, including Broege's Concerto for Marimba and Wind Orchestra, Persichetti's Symphony No. 6 for Band, and McTee's Timepiece. Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $5-$8.

FRIDAY 5/25

SEATTLE COMPOSERS SALON--Seattle-area composers present and perform finished works, previews, and works-in-progress. Music at these monthly concerts range from Neo-fill-in-the-blank to High Modern to furiously eclectic. Composer Tom Baker facilitates an informal discussion to help sort it all out. Seattle Mennonite Church, 3120 NE 125th St in Lil' Ol' Lake City, 8 pm, $5 donation.

SUNDAY 5/27

BARRY LIEBERMAN--A string quartet usually has two violinists, a violist, and a cellist, but sometimes composers write for four string instruments and call it a string quartet anyway. UW faculty Barry Lieberman and friends perform Rossini's rarely heard six string quartets for two violins, cello, and double bass. Rossini, best known for The Barber of Seville, had an unfailing ear for melody, so these quartets promise good clean fun. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 2 pm, $8-$10.

LADIES MUSICAL CLUB--Today must be the day for strange string ensembles. After pianist Lisa Murray performs music by Scarlatti, Mendelssohn, and Granados, a trio (!) of double bassists play Irish and Hungarian folk melodies, original compositions, and arrangements. Frye Art Museum, corner of Cherry and Terry, 622-6882, 2 pm, free.

TUESDAY 5/29

UW CHAMBER SINGERS & MARC SEALES--Mysteriously titled "Bookends: Music for Choir and Jazz Piano," this concert features jazz pianist Marc Seales "realizing" (a fancy word for improvising and filling out) the skeletal continuo parts of choral music by Bach, Monteverdi, Tallis, and others in the harmonic language of jazz. Purists may complain, but the Third Stream folks (Gunther Schuller, the late John Lewis, Stan Kenton, and others) brought together jazz and classical in the 1950s with often provocative results; expect to be intrigued. Or infuriated. Meany Theater, UW campus, 543-4880, 7:30 pm, $5-$8.
