THURSDAY 6/28
ARONOFF CHAMBER MUSIC SERIES--Don't ask me why, but I've got a thing for violas, so any ensemble essaying the Mozart Viola Quintet is tops in my book. If violas aren't your speed, they'll also play Mozart's Flute Quartet in D major and Beethoven's Piano Quartet in E flat major, op. 16. Bastyr University Chapel, 14500 Juanita Drive NE, Kenmore, 253-474-6922, 7:30 pm, $5-$10.

FRIDAY 6/29
BRILLIG STRING QUARTET--'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe with string quartets by Haydn (Quartet in C op. 74, no. 1), Bartok's Second String Quartet, and the middle period Beethoven Quartet in E minor op. 59. All mimsy were the borogoves.... Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1215 Thomas St, 527-1836, 8 pm, $5-$10.
SATURDAY 6/30
SEATTLE CREATIVE ORCHESTRA--Creative is a loaded word, but which other orchestra in town consistently programs so much new and overlooked contemporary music? The SCO presents the world premiere of a concerto for kayagum (Korean zither) by Jacqueline Jeeyoung Kim with soloist Jung Ae Lee, and a concerto by Henry Cowell with local koto wizard Elizabeth Falconer. Korean composer Jin Hi Kim's Eternal Rock, Toru Takemitsu's Archipelago S., and pioneering experimentalist Ruth Crawford Seeger's Music for Small Orchestra round out the concert. Shorecrest Performing Arts Center, 15343 25th Ave NE, Shoreline, 789-3628, 8 pm, $10-$12.
TOSHI MAKIHARA--The only person I have heard use air as an audible percussion instrument, Makihara is a wry, kinetic, and sometimes absurdly funny performer. In Seattle at the behest of the Seattle Improvised Music Festival, the Philadelphia-based percussionist duets with local guitar generalissimo Bill Horist. Also featured is a saxophone/bass clarinet and clarinet duet of Greg Sinibaldi and Jesse Canterbury. Second Avenue Pizza, 2015 Second Ave, 956-0489, 8:30 pm, $5.
SUNDAY 7/1
SEATTLE SYMPHONY--For the SSO's final concert of the season, Gerard Schwarz conducts Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Joseph Haydn, Haydn's Symphony No. 99, and Richard Strauss' An Alpine Symphony. If you're like me, even late Haydn symphonies tend to enleaden the eyelids, but the Strauss, which features the 4,490-pipe Watjen Organ, will definitely wake you up. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, 215-4747, 2 pm, $10-$69. Also Thurs Jun 28, 7:30 pm and Fri Jun 29, 8 pm.
MONDAY 7/2
SEATTLE CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL--Inaugurating a July stuffed with chamber music, the SCMF's opening night includes Mozart's Trio for Violin Cello and Piano in G major, K. 496, Martinu's Duo No. 1 for Violin and Cello, and Mendelssohn's String Quintet in B flat major op. 87. Arrive early for the free recital of Richard Strauss' Sonata for Violin and Piano, which starts at 7 pm in the nearby McKay Chapel--it will probably be packed. Lakeside School, 14050 First Ave NE, 283-8808, 8 pm, $15-$32.
