CLASSICAL

THURSDAY 7/19

CLIMAX GOLDEN TWINS--Accompanied by Jesse Paul Miller's projections and films, Seattle's stalwart experimentalists serve up a tasty evening of musique concrète and aural collage. Matt Shoemaker, who sculpts field recordings and live improvisations into alluring soundscapes, opens the show. Henry Art Gallery, UW Campus, 543-2281, 8 pm, $8-$10.

FRIDAY 7/20

SEATTLE BAROQUE--I have a hard time keeping my Handel operas straight, but I do remember that Apollo and Daphne has several good tunes. Also on the program: Handel's Concerto Grosso in F op. 3 no. 4 and the Oboe Concerto in G minor. If you need more than my hazy recommendation, try Saturday's free family concert with added narration at the still-hungover (and therefore family-friendly) hour of 11:30 a.m. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 322-3118, 8 pm, $27-$46. Also Sun July 22, 4 pm.

SATURDAY 7/21

ROBIN McCABE--The dilemma in planning a Great Composers and Pianists concert is not who to include but who to omit. Many of the great 19th- and 20th-century composers were also superb pianists who wrote spiffy piano music, but McCabe only tackles the familiar: Beethoven, Chopin, Liszt, Ravel, and Gershwin. Maybe we'll get Stravinsky, Cage, or Riley next time. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 4:15 pm, $8-$10.

SUNDAY 7/22

BYRON SCHENKMAN--Seattle Baroque's artistic director and keyboardist offers a solo harpsichord recital titled "Muses of the Baroque." The program features suites from Fischers' Musicalischer Parnassus and compositions from the court of Louis XIV by Chambonnieres and Jacquet de la Guerre. The pre-concert lecture, "Apollo and the Muses in Western Art," starts at noon. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, 322-3118, 1 pm, $8-$15.

SPECE-JOHNSON DUO--Clarinetist Richard Spece and pianist Kevin Johnson play sonatas for clarinet and piano by Devienne, Ireland, Poulenc, and Etler. The Poulenc, a superb choice for breezy summer chamber music, should prove a delight. Bethany Lutheran Church, 7400 Woodlawn Ave NE, 3 pm, free.

SEATTLE CREATIVE ORCHESTRA--The SCO presents a passel of premieres by Northwest composers including Jangdan by Wha-Yeon Lee, On the Dust of Open Earth by Jarrad Powell, and Gathering Violets by Roger Nelson featuring Warren Chang on the erhu (Chinese fiddle). Bay Area-based shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) virtuoso Phillip Gelb is the centerpiece of Tom Baker's Five Shades of Time: Concerto for Shakuhachi. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 4:15 pm, $8-$10.

MONDAY 7/23

DEGENERATE ART ENSEMBLE--Celebrating the release of their CD Rinko, the DAE bring their orchestral anarchy to Club I-Spy, a venue which should suit the DAE's scrappy sound just fine. Three other fine avant acts also grace the bill: Intonarumori, fiendish prepared-guitar maestro Bill Horist, and Amy Denio. Club I-Spy, 1921 Fifth Ave, 9 pm, $6.
