CLASSICAL
by Christopher DeLaurenti

FRIDAY 9/14

JOSEPH ADAM--Decades ago, the organ was touted as King of the Instruments because of its mass, loudness, and vast palette of sounds. While greatly appreciated today, the organ also challenges music writers to forgo formulating lewd puns from press releases. As part of their Organ at Noon series organist Joseph Adam gives a 50-minute recital of organ works by Bach, Böhm, Krebs, Saint-Saëns, Rheinberg, and Bolt. Kilworth Chapel, University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, (253) 879-3555, noon, free.

PIANO MANIA--Billed as a "love letter to the piano," this show boasts a battery of pianists (Louis Magor, Keith Terhune, Connie Corrick, and one improbably named Hokum Jeebs) proffering a vaudevillian potpourri of classical, ragtime, jazz, and otherwise old-time piano music. Hokum Hall, 7904 35th Ave. SW, 937-3613, 8 pm, $12-$14. Also Sat 9/15.

SATURDAY 9/15

NORTHWEST SINFONIETTA--I'm not much for Mozart, but the intimate acoustics of Town Hall makes it the best place around to hear this all-Mozart concert. The Northwest Sinfonietta plays the Lucio Silla overture and Symphony No. 36, the "Linz." Clarinetist Richard Stoltzman joins the band for Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. Town Hall, Eighth and Seneca, (253) 383-5344, 8 pm, $25-$28.

SEATTLE SYMPHONY--Gerard Schwarz and the SSO kick off their new season with three safe bets. An ear of corn (Copland's A Lincoln Portrait narrated by Lethal Weapon 8 star Danny Glover), a thriller by Leonard Bernstein (Symphonic Dances from West Side Story), and snippets from light opera (Bizet's excerpts from Carmen). How, in my many years of concertgoing and listening to records, I have escaped hearing anything by Bizet remains a mystery to me, but one person's warhorse might be another's stunning surprise. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, 215-4747, 8 pm, $26-$80.

SUNDAY 9/16

LIND/COPE--St. Andrew's inaugurates their new Bond mechanical action organ with music for organ and violin. Organist Richard Lind and violinist Richard Cope will perform works by Bach, Daquin, Franck, Krebs, Sparly, and Barber. All those composers and at a hangover-friendly time too! St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 111 NE 80th, 523-7476, 4 pm, free.

MOSCOW CHAMBER ORCHESTRA--This gig should be a barn burner. The MCO and its crackling, rough-hewn ensemble sound offer an alluring alternative to the overly smooth string sheen heard on today's orchestral records. On the program: Vivaldi's Concerto for Four Violins, Piazzolla's Two Tangos, Shostakovich's Chamber Symphony, and Bizet (excerpts from Carmen). The splendid Carol Rosenberger is the soloist in Beethoven's seldom heard Concertante for Piano and Strings. Historic Everett Theatre, 2911 Colby, (425) 258-6766, 7 pm, $10-$29.

MONDAY 9/17

TRUMMERFLORA--This San Diego-based collective of avant musicians are touring with the Whisper Chipper, an ambient/noise improvisation piece based on a field recording of a chipper/shredder run through multiple effects and filtered and fused into a bewildering buzz of shifting delay loops. Also on the bill is Paul Dickow, who creates collage-based narrative music using low-to-medium tech tabletop electronics such as DIY noiseboxes and temperamental analog drum machine circuits. I-Spy, 1921 5th Ave, 9 pm, $6.
