CLASSICAL
by Christopher DeLaurenti

FRIDAY 10/12

DAVID KOREVAAR--Ever since Franz Liszt barnstormed Europe in the mid-1800s, pianist-composers have breezed through almost every burg that had an available piano. Apart from his own music, Korevaar proffers a passel of preludes by Fauré, Rachmaninoff, and Chopin. Brechemin Auditorium, UW campus, 685-8384, 8 pm, $8-$10.

OPUS 7--This enterprising choral outfit kicks off its tenth season with guest conductor Dale Warland. Apart from the usual Rachmaninoff, Opus 7 sings Rautavaara's rhythmically vital Credo as well as British composer Herbert Howells' Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing, one of a raft of pieces composed to commemorate JFK. Organist Joseph Adam joins the ensemble for Bengt Hambreus's Motetum Archangeli Michaelis which uses texts from the Book of Revelation to depict the upheaval of late 1960s America. St. James Cathedral, 801 Columbia St, (Ninth & Marion), 782-2899, 8:15 pm, $20, student and seniors pay what you can. Also on Sat 10/13 at St. Mark's at 8 pm.

SATURDAY 10/13

KRONACHER/KILLIAN--Though best known for his over-the-top operas and macho tone poems, Richard Strauss wrote some sumptuous songs, too. Pianist Fred Kronacher and soprano Deeji Killian perform songs by Strauss, Wolf, and Fauré. Kronacher goes solo for the second half of the gig and plays Two Intermezzi by Brahms and Two Preludes op. 23, nos. 1 and 5 by Rachmaninoff. Greenlake United Methodist Church, 6415 First Ave NE, 526-8553, 8 pm, $12 -$17.

SUNDAY 10/14

VERMEER STRING QUARTET--Fauré thrice in one week? Minor composers hit the hat trick eventually. Pianist Allan Dameron joins the Vermeer String Quartet for Fauré's seldom heard Piano Quartet in C minor. Also on the bill are string quartets by Beethoven (the quartet in C, op. 18, no. 4) and Bartók's Second String Quartet. Recital Hall at Benaroya, 200 University St, 343-0445, 2:30 pm, $25-$30.

MONDAY 10/15

HILARY HAHN--Usually on the road playing violin concertos with orchestras, Hilary Hahn serves up a recital of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and Saint-Saëns. Why someone booked this piano and violin duo in Benaroya's big hall is beyond me. Sure, they'll pack 'em in, but if it's anything like the Anne-Sophie Mutter recital from a few years back, those in the bleachers will have to crank up (or purchase) their hearing aids. My hearing trumpet is ready to go. With Natalie Zhu on piano. Benaroya Hall, 200 University St, 215-4747, 7:30 pm, $11-$66.

TUESDAY 10/16

DOROTHY HOKANSON--After a long illness, composer and composition teacher Dorothy Hokanson died recently. Born in 1916, Hokanson proved to be an anomaly: a female composer whose works were performed by Seattle and Vancouver, BC orchestras in the early 1940s. A multitude of Seattle musicians gather for a memorial concert that includes Canons for Two Clarinets, Dialogues for Violin and Piano, and the Second Piano Sonata. University Christian Church, 4731 15th NE, 522-0169, 8 pm, free.
