"The rise of bread baking in Seattle tells us something about the city's emergence..." —"Seattle Rising," Seattle Weekly, June 28, 2005

The extreme bakers on the cover of Seattle Weekly last week brought back memories. Laura Cassidy's "Seattle Rising" is about independent local bakers—and it's basically a rehash of Jean Galton's 1995 Seattle Weekly cover story, "The Rise of Bread."

"Seattle... has become one of the important players in this country's breadmaking business..." —"The Rise of Bread," Seattle Weekly, April 12, 1995

Has bread been rising in Seattle for 10 straight years? Or did bread fall between 1995 and 2005, only to rise again? Or did the hacks who pull together the Weekly simply repackage a 10-year-old story—using basically the same cover text? Not exactly. A quick trip to the library revealed the Weekly actually recycled a 20-year-old story.

"...let your bread rise in a warm place." — "Bread: On the Rise!" Seattle Weekly, December 11, 1985

We love good bread as much as the next carboholic, and we've known for years that the crusty old hippies at Seattle Weekly are out of ideas, but the same cover story, with the same cover text, every 10 years? What will be on the cover of Seattle Weekly in 2015? (Assuming there is a Seattle Weekly in 2015.) If the United States is a theocracy by then, perhaps "He Has Risen" with a loaf of bread nailed to a cross?
