Oliver's Lounge in the Mayflower Park Hotel may have questionable floral drapes, but it also has that unmistakable hotel-bar greatness—watch the city go past the enormous windows, secure in its embrace. Oliver's has been making fine cocktails since 1976, back when the honorable Murray Stenson (Il Bistro, Zig Zag, Canon) presided over the bar. (The hotel was built during Prohibition, in 1927, and the lounge was initially a Bartell's drugstore; following that, it was the circus-themed Carousel Room, including antique carousel horses. The hotel is independently owned, by Birney and Marie Dempcy, who've been committed to environmentally friendly practices since "before it was hip.") The martinis here win the International Martini Classic Challenge—hosted on site—with almost suspicious regularity. The drinks are priced at hotel-bar rates, but: free appetizers at happy hour Monday through Friday.
