THURSDAY JUNE 24
PAUL OAKENFOLD, DONALD GLAUDE
Fortysomething Brit Paul Oakenfold is the P. Diddy of trouse (trance-house): He rakes in huge wads of cash, is loved by millions worldwide, and is castigated by many more--especially by underground heads and bitter journos like me--as a scourge of electronic music. (Touring with U2? Beyond the pale, mate.) Sure, Oakie's figured in the conception of many big clubs, labels, and dance movements, and he did co-produce Happy Mondays' 1990 classic Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches, but he's also bored us senseless with loads of double-disc DJ-mix duds. When you reach Oakenfold's level (he's reputedly Earth's most popular DJ), you almost by definition have to be as bland as the Gap or Jay Leno. Which is why an Oakenfold set will never blow your mind with daring selections, dazzling mixes, interesting contrasts--or even raise your pulse rate beyond a comfortable 90 beats per minute. With Eva. Showbox, 1426 First Ave, 628-3151, 9 pm-2 am, 21+, $25 adv/$30 DOS.
