THURSDAY AUGUST 5

DAVID ALVARADO

L.A. DJ/producer Alvarado is an underground-house mainstay with a crateful of deep, mesmerizing tracks that have moved hearts and butts worldwide. Discerning jocks like John Selway, Josh Wink, John Acquaviva, and Terry Lee Brown Jr. have laced their mix CDs and sets with his humid, Afro-Latin-tinged cuts, and that's why they earn big bucks. See Sound Lounge, 115 Blanchard St, 374-3733, 9 pm-2 am, 21+.

SATURDAY AUGUST 7

DJ RAP

L.A.-based DJ Rap was the (stunning) face of jungle for a minute; some pundits thought she'd become a bona fide star. After accruing much cred in UK drum 'n' bass circles, Rap made a bid for pop stardom, failed, and emerged from that mess with an interest in spinning breakbeat tracks. Odds are she'll bypass her wicked jungle platters and opt for feel-good funktronica tonight. Club Medusa, 2218 Western Ave, 448-8887, 10 pm-2 am, 21+, "ladies" free, $15.

GROWING

Data Breaker has much time for ambient space-rock bands like Olympia's Growing. With their second album on Kranky Records, The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light, due in October, Growing's Kevin Doria and Joe Denardo give Seattle a preview of their enveloping waves of finely wrought feedback and static that tap into the cosmos' universal hum. Growing's holy whorls of drones are simultaneously Sunn 0))) heavy and angel-wing light. This music of solemn grandeur will get even the staunchest Marxist feeling mystical. Liquid Lounge/EMP, 325 Fifth Ave N, 770-2700, 9 pm-1:30 am, 21+, free.

MARK FARINA

Chicago-via-San Francisco DJ/producer Mark Farina built his empire with the Mushroom Jazz mix series (now four volumes deep) of suavely chilled triphop and smooth jazz, but he's equally renowned for his wide-ranging house sets. The slick vet's touring behind his flamboyantly funky split release with Chicago-house legend Derrick Carter, Live at OM (OM), which features killer tracks from Cajmere, Land Shark, and Seattle's Jacob London and LawnChair Generals, among many others. And respect must be paid to anyone ballsy enough to slip Herb Alpert into a mix. With Brian Lyons and Wesley Holmes. Chop Suey, 1325 E Madison St, 324-8000, 9 pm-2 am, 21+, $16 adv.
