SON OF ROSE, NDCV
Son of Rose (Kamran Sagedhi) is quickly becoming one of my favorite local laptop producers. He's one of the few musicians around (Ben Torrence, AKA Splinters, is another) taking the clicks-n-cuts aesthetic to compelling new places. Sagedhi's a minimalist, but his microsoundtracks are far from antiseptic, like much of the output in this area can be. Instead, he infuses his sparse 0s and 1s with a rare, almost florid (how apt) beauty. Check out some tracks at www.sonofrose.net/listen.html. With Paul Edwards. SEKSU ROBA, EVOLUTION CONTROL COMMITTEE, BRAN FLAKES
Kitsch and audio pranksterism reign supreme tonight. L.A. male/female duo Seksu Roba come across as a more camp version of our own IQU, complete with Sukho Lee's theremin and analog-synth pyrotechnics, and Lun*nah Menoh's kittenish vocals. Seksu Roba's latest album, 2003's Pleasure Vibrations (Eenie Meenie), pulsates with tongue-in-chic, Deee-liteful loungetronica (and a nice cover of My Bloody Valentine's "Moon Song"). From all reports, Seksu are a multimedia spectacular live, featuring a robot that induces widespread penis envy. Local duo Bran Flakes transform snippets from unloved bargain-bin wax into zany ditties. Ohio's Evolution Control Committee started this whole mashup biz; too bad they grunt out a corny dud to every inspired word/music gene splice they execute. This event features a live performance by massively popular Israeli psytrance masters Infected Mushroom and a DJ set by Dragn'fly, a female spinner renowned for her well-woven, highly tweaked blends of "intelligent techno, trance, and psy-influenced hard house."
