This fish 'n' chips shack ensconced in between Neumos and Moe Bar gets its fish fresh daily from the Mutual Fish Company and offers housemade sauces like tartar, preserved lemon aioli, and chili mayo, but it's still good 'n' greasy for when you're drunk. Of special note: the housemade slaw (super tart, made with red cabbage) and the slices of lemon they fry up and serve alongside the fish (unexpected, great). They will also sandwich anything on a Macrina roll for you (try the battered-and-fried shrimp), and it's open super late. Also, beer! Asked what they put into their batter to make it taste good—actual answer: paprika—one guy behind the counter said, "Marijuana." The other guy said, "Love."

The food is mediocre (enjoy that inch of soggy half-fried breading on your fish!) and insanely overpriced. I guess you're paying for the broom closet ambiance and custom-surliness of the staff?

Field Roast Sandwich = Amazing-ness

Their Field Roast sandwich is the best vegetarian sandwich I have ever had the pleasure of eating; it was love at first bite. And the staff! They are ever so friendly.

Could have been better if it wasn't so greasy and salty. Which is a shame because I liked the batter and the fish was wonderful. However, no one likes to chomp into deep fried goodness and feel like they are biting into a sponge saturated with oil.
I liked the cozy interior and the people working that night were nice. Perhaps it would have been better to ask them to re fire the order but we were hungry and limited on time....
I wanted to like this place more and was really excited to try it but feel let down.

They never seem to be open late, which I would have thought was one of the key reasons for their existence. Please, PSFF, do your part to feed hungry people after they leave the bars or shows!

Still mourning for Frites, but this helps

First it must be said that this place has a hard act to follow. Its predecessor in this space - Belgian Frites - was so good that it was plausible evidence of intelligent design. The space has been cleaned up a lot. Depending on your point of view it has either lost its hole-in-the-wall charm, or it has finally received the serious scrubbing it desperately needed. The prices are high for what you get, but the fish really is good. When you place your order they pull out a whole chunk of fresh fish, cut it up into ~1 inch cubes while you watch, dredge it through a very light batter, and toss it into the fryer. No frozen pre-breaded nuggets here. The house-made tartar is excellent. The fries are also good - but nothing compared to the former Belgian frites (sigh... nothing is). We tried the Spanish fries, and while the addition of sour cream and sweet chile sauce was tasty, we found it made the fries unpleasantly soggy. The fried green beans were crisp, not overdone at all, and the lemon aioli was surprisingly light and delicious. There is no seating to speak of - but plenty of counters where you can stand and eat. Not a place I'd go for dinner, but perfect for an after-bar snack.
