The Who

Who You Calling a Nigger?/University District/Fri April 25/Between 5 and 6 pm: Sometime this afternoon, unknown suspect(s) painted "Nigger" on the hood of a maroon 1984 Mazda GLC four-door parked on the 5200 block of Brooklyn Ave NE. The suspects also splattered red paint on the passenger-side windows and doors. Sgt. Bernstein responded to the scene and he took seven photos of the damage and the surrounding area. The victim was a 22-year-old white woman who explained to Sgt. Bernstein that she had no ties to any African American persons at her house, in her circle of friends, and from her near and distant past. As a consequence, she believed that she was not targeted, that it was just a random act of racism.

Who the Hell Is Calling Me?/Maple Leaf/Sat April 26/1:25 pm: On the listed date and time, a Maple Leaf woman called the police to report a suspicious phone caller. Officer Seelig was dispatched to her house to investigate the incident. Upon arrival, Officer Seelig was informed by the Maple Leaf woman that she had received a phone call yesterday from a man claiming to be a psychologist doing serious research. The man stated that Women's Studies had put her name on a list of good candidates for the research he was conducting, which was in the field of female intelligence--he was trying to determine how women might "use more of their brains." The man asked if he could ask her a series of very personal questions. The woman authorized him to do so. However, the questions, which consumed a whole hour of her free time, had nothing to do with her brain but of her sex life--her sexual activity, preference, and so on. When completed, the researcher asked for his subject's address, so as to send her his findings. The Maple Leaf woman told him to just send it to her by e-mail. He said fine and hung up. The next day she received an e-mail from a group called Women's Studies that warned of a person "who is doing bogus research and might be a stalker." The victim stated that she now knew of at least four other people who had been called by the phony researcher, who appears to be going down a list in alphabetical order.

Who Fired That Gun?/Downtown/Sun April 27/2:53 am: Officer Rivera writes: "I was doing an area check in the listed area for a shots call when I saw the suspect standing under a light pole urinating on the sidewalk. The suspect was also talking on his cell phone. I directed my spotlight at the suspect in an attempt to make him cease his actions. He ignored me and continued urinating [and talking on the cell phone]. There were people walking in the area (including females[!]). I contacted the suspect, and instructed him to cease his actions. The suspect became hostile and confrontational, yelling obscenities. Due to the hostility, the suspect was placed in handcuffs. The suspect regained his composure and was interviewed. He stated that he had heard shots fired but was not involved or knew who was. Sgt. Unger screened the incident."
