The Body of Cobain/Fremont/Wed

Sept 7/10:13 pm: Officer Stevens reports: "I was dispatched to North 35th Street/Phinney Avenue North to assist an off-duty officer who had been assaulted while working executive-protection detail for City of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. When I arrived, the off-duty officer, who was dressed in plain clothes, was standing next to the suspect, who was seated on the curb. The off-duty officer instructed me to handcuff the suspect. The suspect was recording what was happening on his camcorder. I cuffed the suspect and patted him down for weapons. He frequently called the off-duty officer 'baldy,' and was very agitated. I transported the suspect to the North Precinct.

"At the precinct, the off-duty officer provided these details: 'I was working security detail for Mayor Nickels while he attended a function in Fremont. During the function, the suspect attempted several times to access the mayor. When the mayor was getting into his car to leave the function, the suspect rushed toward the mayor's car. I had my back to the suspect, and the suspect kicked me in the right calf and shoved me to the side to get closer to the Mayor. I had to physically restrain the suspect by grabbing his shoulders and shirt. I identified myself as a Seattle police officer many times.'

"...The Hi8 camcorder tape that the suspect used during this incident was viewed. It showed the suspect talking into his camera while standing outside the building were the mayor was. When the mayor came out of the function and began talking to citizens outside, the suspect pointed the camera at him while loudly yelling questions. When the mayor got into his car, the video showed the suspect running toward the front of the car, yelling to the Mayor about Kurt Cobain's mutilated body. The tape did not show the assault on the off-duty officer.... I screened this arrest with Sgt P. Pendergrass. The suspect was booked into King County Jail."

According to the Seattle Police Department's press office, the name of the suspect in this report is Richard W. Lee, a mayoral candidate and host of the public-access channel program Kurt Cobain Was Murdered.
