Downed Seahawk/Pioneer Square/Mon Oct 17/2 am: Officer Vaca reports: "Upon arrival, we noticed a large crowd of males/females on the northwest corner of First Avenue South and South Main Street. I could see various males/females pushing and yelling at each other. I immediately notified SPD Radio to send more units to the scene. My partner and I began to disperse the crowd verbally. I then noticed a black male lying on the ground of the intersection. I approached the male, who was surrounded by various persons trying to render aid. I asked the individuals to step back so that we could evaluate the victim.

"I asked the victim what happened. He stated that his head, neck, and chest areas were in severe pain. I asked how the injuries occurred. He said, 'I don't remember.' I asked if he could give a description of the person who struck him. He said, 'I don't remember.' The victim did not appear to be intoxicated.

"...I asked the victim's girlfriend what happened and she said both she and the victim were exiting [the club]—he in front, leading her through the crowd on the sidewalk—when he placed his hand on suspect one and said, 'Excuse me.' Suspect one [turned and yelled], 'I'm not one of your girls. Stop pushing me.' The victim and the suspect began pushing each other. The victim punched suspect one with his right fist, striking him in the face. Then suspect two, who was standing close by, approached and struck the victim with his forearm. The victim fell to the ground. Both suspect one and suspect two began fighting other males around the victim. The victim's girlfriend did not see any other persons strike the victim.

"...[Other witnesses] saw one of the suspects pick up a magnetic street sign and strike the fallen victim at least two times on the body... Officers made an area search for the suspects with negative results." The victim in this report is a black male named Ken Hamlin, a free safety for the Seattle Seahawks. The assault, which took place in front of Larry's Nightclub, cracked his skull, hospitalized him for days and jeopardized his lucrative career in professional football.

Dead Before Dawn/Seward Park/Mon Oct 17/5:08 am: Officer Briskly reports: "The victim was found lying on his back on the sidewalk. The victim had no pulse and personnel from SFD pronounced him dead on arrival. A witness told responding officers that he was beginning his morning jog when he discovered the body near 57th Avenue South and South Dawson Street. He asked the victim if he was okay. He got no response. Due to apparent injuries and nonresponse, he ran home to call 911." The victim in this report is Terrell Devon Milam, a convicted killer (in 1993 he shot a man dead over a disputed craps game in Pratt Park) and aspiring rapper. Three hours before his body was discovered, Milam is reported to have been at the scene of Ken Hamlin's undoing. Milam was not supposed be out at that late hour, 2:00 a.m., but in bed in a federal halfway house on Capitol Hill—he used a dummy to obscure his absence.

The police state there is of yet—Tuesday, October 25—"no connection" between the murder of a black gangster and the assault on a black football player.
